The week began with a tough loss to West Hempstead at home, which put the Big Red one game out of first place. The rematch brought the Big Red to West Hempstead. Glen Cove gave the ball to their only senior pitcher, Keith Dempster, who responded with a 3-2, 3-hit victory to even the series. The game started off with a 2-0 lead early for the Big Red - Matt Lindenbaum stole home for the first run and Tom Monahan hit an RBI double. West Hempstead tied it up in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the second, Paul Casale led off with a walk and was moved over to second. This brought Joel Basilion up to the plate. Joel came up big with a run-scoring triple over the center fielder's head! Keith came out in the bottom half and put the Rams down in order for the victory.

Saturday night, the Big Red took on the Falcons of Locust Valley down under the lights at City Stadium. The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Big Red came roaring back with a game-tying double by Tom Monahan. Meanwhile, Guiseppe Gallizzo settled down to scatter six hits for the remainder of the game. Helping his course he K'd 11 Falcons. Hitting star of the game was Joel Basilion with 2 hits.

This week the Big Red continues their quest for a playoff spot with a three-game series vs. New Hyde Park.

The Glen Cove Boys Lacrosse season ended with two heart-breaking one-goal games! The first game brought New Hyde Park to town. In the final home game for seniors Sean Basdavanos, Cam Bocchino, Brian Cavallo, Jeff Digal, Nick Discala, Chad Gleason, Gianni Maraia and Derek Schubert, the Big Red jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. Joe Kopito, Cam and brother Dom Bocchino scored goals.

Cam and Joe would tally goals in the second quarter as the Big Red led 5-4 at the half. New Hyde Park came out storming in the third quarter to take a 6-4 lead, but Chris Corbin would draw the Big Red closer with 2 minutes remaining in the period. NHP would score early in the fourth quarter, but the Big Red would come right back to tie the game on goals by Corbin and Brian Fugazy. With time running out, the Big Red would regain the lead on a Joe Kopito goal, but fate was not on the side of the Big Red. NHP tied the game in the final minute. With Glen Cove in the penalty box, NHP would score the winning goal with just six seconds left, making the final score GC 9 - NHP 10.

Friday, The Big Red traveled to Merrick to take on the Mepham Pirates. In a game highlighted by the defenses, the Big Red found themselves down 3-2 at the half. The Big Red goals were scored by Jason Lindenbaum and Dave McCalla. Glen Cove would tie the game in the third quarter on a Cam Bocchino man-up goal - the Pirates would regain the lead with 12 seconds left in the quarter.

The pressure mounted, as the Big Red and the Pirates would trade possessions in the fourth quarter. Goalie Dan Bellissimo would register 5 saves in the last quarter. Finally, Brian Fugazy would pick up a loose ball and score for the Big Red! Would there be enough time to tie the score? With the Big Red season hanging in the balance, Matt Hurwitz would line up for the face-off. The draw was on, but as Cam Bocchino picked up the ball, the horn would sound ending the Big Red Season.

The Boys Varsity Lacrosse team ended the year at 7-8 overall and 4-6 in the league! This team was a pleasure to watch this season. They played together as a team and usually kept everyone on the edge of their seats. The level of play, unfortunately, is not always reflected in the final score. Congratulations to the entire team, Coach Tripp and Coach Checola on a great season!

Running at a very windy JFK Bellmore on May 14, Rich Tarver took second in the 100m dash with a finals time of 10.9 after a semis time of 10.9. He earned All-Division honors for his finish. In the 200m dash, Rich came in 4th with a time of 23.4. In 10 races this year, Rich has won the 100m dash 7 times. He will run on May 22-23 at the county meet and try to earn All-County honors. His best time of 10.7 is Nassau County's best time this season.

In the 110 High Hurdles, senior Jeff Rudloff came in second with a time of 15.9 and earned All-Division honors for his finish. Jeff will also be going to the county championships. Jeff threw the discus 86.8 and was the anchor of the 3rd place 4x100m relay team of Miguel Quinones, Travis Watson and Dave Paskoff. In the discus, senior Dave Paskoff threw a season's best 112'2" in the discus and came in 4th place, missing All-Division by 1 inch! Senior John Peralta also threw a season's best in the discus with a 6th place throw of 107'3". Travis Watson came in 4th in the High Jump with a jump of 5'2" and triple jumped 35'2.75". The 4x400m relay team of Anthony Condello, Miguel Quinones, Joe Mazza and Tin chin broke 4 minutes for the second time this year with a race of 3:59.7 and a 4th place finish. The 4x800m relay finished 6th and ran a good time of 10:26.1 with a team of Mike Biscardi, Manjit Singh, Anthony Hui and Allen Shin. Tin Chin ran a 1:05.7 in the 400 IH and 19.8 in the 110 HH. Miguel Quinones ran a 57.6 in the 400m dash and two relays back-to-back. The team scored 40 points and came in 5th in the meet.

Also competing were Johan Ortega (shotput/discus), Jesse Liang (Shot put/discus), Jiraj Hampton (100/LJ/TJ), Hung-I Liao (100/LJ), Joe Shin (100/LJ/TJ), Tony Condello (400m), Joe Mazza (400m - 1:01.9), Mike Biscardi (1600m - 5:21.2), Allen Shin (1600m) and Manjit Singh (800m - 2:29.4). The next meet is May 17th at the Gold Coast Relays and then May 22 - 23 at Mitchell Park for the County Championships.

The boys track team had a great showing at the Freshmen-Sophomore Championships on Friday, May 11. In the discus' Johan Ortega threw a personal best 78' and came in 4th. Jesse Liang threw a personal best 62'1". Johan threw 24'9.5" and Jesse threw 23'6" in the freshman shotput. Jiraj Hampton jumped 30'5" in the triple jump. Tin Chin ran a personal best 1:05.3 in the 400 Intermediate Hurdles and came in 6th. In the 100m dash Hung-I Liao ran 13.5. For the 400m run, Miguel Quinones ran 56.8, Philip Kong ran 1:00.4 (a personal best), Joe Mazza ran 1:03.5, and Frank Graziosi ran 1:11.8 (personal best). In the 1600m run (mile) Allen Shin ran 5:26.5 and Manjit Singh ran 5:35.3 - both were personal bests. The 4x100m relay ran a 51.9 (Hung-I, Jiraj, Tin, Miguel) and the 4x400m relay ran 4:16.1 (Joe, Allen, Manjit, Philip).

Junior Rich Tarver took home two gold medals on Tuesday, May 8 at the North Shore Invitational. His times of 11.4 in the semis and finals of the 100m dash and his time of 23.4 in the 200m were off of his best pace, but good enough to win both events. In the shotput, John Peralta threw a personal best 36'10.75" and won a 5th place medal. Also throwing a personal best in the shot put was Jesse Liang (26'4.5) and Johan Ortega (25'9.5). In the discus, John Peralta threw a personal best 99'1" and Dave Paskoff threw 90'7". In the long jump Travis Watson came in 6th place with his first leap ever of 16'5", while Jiraj Hampton jumped 14'1". In the triple jump Travis Watson won a 3rd place medal with a jump 36'5", Will Ng jumped 32'4" and Jiraj Hampton jumped 30'5.5" in his first triple jump ever. In the 100m dash, Jeff Rudloff ran 11.8 in the semis for his firs open 100m dash ever. Jeff came in 6th in the finals with a time of 12.4. Also in the 100m dash were Travis Watson (12.3 and in 3rd in his heat), Dave Paskoff (12.3 and 4th in his heat), Hung-I Liao (13.6) and Jiraj Hampton (14.9). In the 200m dash Tony Condello ran a 27.4. In the 400m run Miguel Quinones ran 56.5 and won a 3rd place medal in the Sophomore/Freshman race. Also running the 400m was Philip Kong (1:00.9), Joe Mazza (1:03), Raja Madaan (1:05.2), Anthony Hui (1:08.1), Frank Graziosi (1:10.6) and Sean Pearlstein (1:18.1). In the 800m run all three runners ran personal bests. Italo Naves (2:19.6), Mike Biscardi (2:21.7) and Allen Shin (2:25.4). Jeff Rudloff won the 100 High Hurdles just after finishing the 100m dash finals with a time of 16.9, and Tin Chin came in 7th with a time of 20.4. Tin Chin also was 5th and won a medal for the 400m Intermediate Hurdles with a time of 1:07.5.
