I would like to extend my congratulations to Ms. Janet Bates-Wilkins and Dr. Kurt Schmeller on their election to the Glen Cove school board. I look forward to working with both of them in the coming year and I know they will bring valuable perspectives and experience to the serious task ahead of us.

I would also like to congratulate Mr. Rick Smith, Ms. Natheley McElrath and Mr. Rob Germino for stepping up and enduring the ordeal of campaigning. Our city and our school district certainly benefit when five good people vie for two seats. Almost 3,000 people voted on Tuesday, the same number who voted last June and about 25 percent more than the average of the past few years. I consider it a healthy sign that increasing numbers of residents are aware of school district issues and are concerned enough to vote.

Dr. Rodger Silletti
