Rev. Eugene J. McManus, 74, died on May 9, 2001, of cancer. He was born in Glen Cove to the late Owen and Beatrice Taylor McManus. He attended St. Patrick's School. After graduating from St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, he joined the US Army infantry and was stationed with the Army of Occupation in Berlin from 1945 to 1947.
Upon his discharge from the Army, he studied for a year at St. Philip Neri Seminary in Boston before entering Cathedral College in Brooklyn. He earned his master of divinity from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington, and was ordained by Bishop Boardman of Brooklyn.
The newly ordained priest's first assignment was to St. Raymond's Church in East Rockaway. Subsequently, he served at Most Holy Trinity, East Hampton, St. Matthew's, Dix Hills, Sts. Cyril and Methodius, Deer Park, St. Martin of Tours, Bethpage, St. Joseph's Church, Hewlett and Maria Regina, Seaford.
Fr. McManus also found time to complete postgraduate work at Iona College in New Rochelle earning a master's degree in pastoral counseling in 1971. According to Msgr. John Alesandro, diocesan administrator, "For many years, Gene served as a chaplain to Teams of Our Lady. Many of his brother priests don't know that he was an expert skier. Most of all, Gene was noted for his kind-hearted and gentle demeanor and his particular devotion in caring for the sick and the homebound."
Retiring in 1996 Fr. McManus resided at St. Joseph's and then at St. Pius in Uniondale. Brother of Charles (the late Sallie), Joseph, Francis (Anne) and Robert (Judy). Also survived by his nieces, nephews, many friends and parishioners. Arrangements were made by the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Transferal Mass of Christ the High Priest was held on May 13. Bishop Emil A. Wcela celebrated a Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church on May 14. Interment St. Patrick's Cemetery. Contributions in Fr. Mildred Jensen, of Glen Head, died on May 13, 2001. Wife of the late John J. Mother of Barbara (Robert) MacPhee and Joan (Stret) Whiting. Dr. Christopher J. Warrell, 72, of Cooperstown and formerly of Glen Head, died following a brief illness on May 13, 2001 at his home. Chris was born on June 22, 1928 in Jersey City, NJ, a son of the late James and Martha (Millar) Warrell. He married Lois Florence Robinson on Jan. 26, 1951 in Merrick.
A native of LI, Chris graduated from high school in Valley Stream and went on to graduate from Hofstra University. From 1950 until 1952, he proudly served his country as a corporal in the US Army during the Korean War. In 1969, he received his doctorate of education from NYU.
He spent his professional life on LI in the field of education, holding many administrative positions during his career. For 14 years he served as superintendent of schools for the North Central School District, retiring in 1984.
A civic-minded individual, Chris willingly volunteered his time and talents to several community organizations. He was currently serving as president of Friends of Bassett as well as chairman of the Otsego County Planning Board. He was also a devoted member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church where he was currently serving on the board of trustess, of which he was formerly chairman. He was also actively involved with the Cooperstown Rotary Club and was a member since 1967 of Spartan Lodge #956, Free and Accepted Masons in Baldwin.
Chris is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lois; two daughters, Debbie Crandall of Westboro, MA, and Susan Fowler (Norman) of Fairport; two grandchildren, Jenna and Jonathan Crandall; his stepmother, Margaret Warrell of Providence, RI; and one aunt, Hilda Smith of Oriskany.
