Al Greene and his family moved to Glen Cove in 1951. Some years later Al bought what is now the Piano Exchange building and opened Fabric Discounts. Later the business was moved to 26 Glen Street. Through his store, hundreds of people from Glen Cove and surrounding towns came to know this entrepreneur and counted on him for materials with which to sew. He became well known at the Glen Cove Golf Course because of his excellent ability at this game. His many friends looked forward to a round with this talented gentleman. Up to this point, few people knew of Al Greene the musician. However, in 1985 Al founded the North Shore Pops Concert Band. This group of local musicians performed at a variety of venues including Morgan Park. Large crowds would gather to hear this band perform at the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival and Al's talent as a conductor was quickly recognized. It was during this period that Al joined the Senior Pops of LI where he played tympani for many years. He was and is today recognized as an outstanding percussionist. In his earlier days he was drummer for many of the "big bands."
