I have read and read many disturbing letters written by the GC School Board. Now I must respond. I teach in the district, I know and care for the kids here. But from what planet are Boeddener and Enright from? Do they ever, and I mean ever, visit the public schools of Glen Cove during the day?
So Boeddener wants to put the middle school in the high school? Where will they fit? Have you ever tried to walk down hallways between classes? How is it possible that there will be any classrooms for the extra 400 plus kids? What will the elementary school kids do with class space? I heard stories about the '60s schools in NYC where the teachers changed classes, but the kids remained in the room. Is that what you want? Do you really have any idea as to what the kids are like today and the teaching requirements are like? In the '60s kids had no MTV, no computers, no color TVs and no phones in the bedroom. Do you want large class sizes of 30 or more? What about the computers in each room, how will they be used if the classes get too large, where will they be placed?
You want to save a buck - but it will hurt a kids education. Perhaps you should spend a week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the high school or middle school and only then tell the public that you have a "brilliant" idea. You appear to be more out of touch with reality than my 94-year-old neighbor and he has had two strokes.
Oh and Enright, credit for drug testing? "Hey kids - pass this drug test and you can get credit and not have to take math your senior year." That idea is so preposterous that it is amazing you even wrote it down on paper. Next thing you will ask for is giving kids extra credit for coming to class on time. Have you been to school? Where is the drug use that you claim? While I know that kids do drugs, drink and more, what purpose will this idea serve? What about a test to make sure that kids are not having sex?
Between the two campus idea, the drug testing, closing campus, school uniforms, etc. I am wondering if you are trying to make the school into some kind of prison camp. Wonder if hard labor is in store for a replacement for detention?
So to the Glen Cove Public ... can we impeach these members because they have lost touch with reality? I say that in order to be on the school board every member must be at each school for at least two days in a year for the full day. Perhaps the insanity will stop and we can get to the real problems.
And a notice for all who care. The continued babble by these board members is getting around. Many teachers from other districts refuse to even think about coming to GC because of the anti-teacher attitude of some of the board. Some tried to vote against tenure. Some can't even support a budget to get passed. With no budget passes and no support then why would any teacher want to come here? I love the kids I teach and what I do, but I wonder where we are going. What will happen when a majority of the teachers retire within the next three to five years? How can we get good teachers and administrators here? I wish that I could run for the school board so some real perspective can be heard. I have been a teacher and part of the school for a long time. The ideas these members propose are not solutions to any problem, they will only cause more problems.
