Glen Cove High School was the site of the third annual holiday wrestling tournament on Thursday, December 28th. Nine teams from around Nassau County and Mount Saint Michael from the Bronx traveled to Glen Cove for the ten team tournament. Glen Cove took second place honors with a tough Garden City team taking first place. Farmingdale High School won third place.
Twelve different Glen Cove wrestlers won medals in the tournament. Nick Discala and Jeff Oglesby both took 6th place in their weight classes. Junior Jason Lee continues to wrestle well taking 5th place. Junior Matt Hurwitz beat a tough James Dreyfuss from Roslyn to advance to the semi-finals. Matt lost there to Chris Parris from Farmingdale who is ranked 1st in Nassau County at 189 lbs. Matt wrestled well to take 4th place. Senior Dave Paskoff continued his winning ways also taking 4th place. Mike Smith missed out on the finals by one point, but would not be denied taking 3rd place honors.
Six other Glen Cove wrestlers made the finals. For three wrestlers, Pete Loidice, Jose Martinez and Marcus Bianconi, it was their first trip to the finals of a multi-team tournament. All three came up short in the championship round, but with all three wrestlers returning next year for their senior year, the future looks bright.
Jeff Rudloff also made the finals, but lost a close decision to Jose Ocasio from Mount Saint Michael.
Glen Cove crowned two champions with Charles McCullough and Steve Sarmiento. Charles won his second consecutive tournament pinning his opponents in the semi-finals and in the finals. Senior Steve Sarmiento won his third straight Glen Cove tournament. He has been crowned champion all three years of the tournament. Only one other wrestler, Ronnie LoFroese of Garden City has made the finals three times.
The Glen Cove wrestlers would like to thank the Glen Cove Booster Club for sponsoring the tournament. They would also like to thank all of the parents, staff and students who helped make this tournament possible. The wrestling squads are coached by Steve Kocienda and Pete Kopecky.
