On Tuesday night, Dec. 26, a call came over the fire department scanner telling of a horse in Brookville who had fallen through a pool cover into the icy water below. When I arrived at the scene, I witnessed a dramatic rescue. Glenwood Fire Department and Brookville police quickly got ropes on the horse and assisted the owner in keeping the equine's head above the water. Meanwhile, two Glenwood volunteers donned wetsuits and jumped into the pool, totally disregarding the risk of injury from the thrashing animal. They anchored a sling beneath him, enabling a tow truck to pull the exhausted, freezing animal out onto the lawn. Due to their prompt and decisive action the horse survived with treatable hypothermia and badly scraped legs.

The Animal Lovers League thanks all those courageous people who braved the bitter cold to save an animal's life.
