The North Shore Vikings had a great recovery win from their previous game against Cold Spring Harbor varsity football team, the Sea Hawks. Last Thursday the Vikings hosted a game to the now (1-2) Valley Stream North Spartans defeating them 16-10 in the final minutes of the game. Though the North Shore Vikings were down most of the game, a combined team effort gave them the go ahead touchdown, which was run in by junior Josh Micelotta #23 in the last two and half minutes of the fourth quarter. The Vikings who are now (2-1) are ranked sixth among their conference out of thirteen other competing teams.
The first half was fairly balanced between the two teams. It was just a matter of which team really wanted the win. In the first quarter Valley Stream North started out with a 45-yard run, by wide receiver Steven Contigliaro #11, to put the first points up on the board for the game. The Spartans kicker Paul Maywald #21 made a good one point kick to bring the Spartans lead up to 7 ending the first quarter. In the second quarter Vikings quarterback Robert Rodriguez ran in a 3-yard touchdown, while kicker Matt Bowe #10 knocked in a good one point kick tying up the game at 7 a piece.
With pressure felt on both teams neither saw losing as an option, as they headed into the second half. In the third quarter both teams held up a good defense not allowing a touchdown on either side. However, kicker Paul Maywald #21 of the Spartans was able to put up a 22 yard field goal late in the quarter to put Valley Stream North up 10-7 with only a quarter remaining. The Vikings brought all the energy possible to the fourth quarter starting with punter Fabio Murillo #72 kicking a perfect punt having it downed by the Spartans at their one-yard line. During the next play, Vikings co-captain and defensive linemen, Matt Tempesta #67, sacked Spartans quarterback Martin Hernandez in the end zone pulling North Shore within a single point of the Spartans at 10-9. Then North Shore proved to be just as deadly on the offensive, by driving 50 yards in 10 runs plowing down the Spartans end of the field. The Vikings then called an "87 reverse split" which dazzled not only the fans but the Spartans as well giving Josh Micelotta #23 just enough time to run in the hand-off without being detected with the ball for the game winning touchdown bringing the score to 16-10.
The North Shore Vikings (2-1) will be playing the Manhasset Indians (2-1) away, next Saturday on October 7 at 2 p.m.
