Evelyn A. Nielsen (nee Grossman), of Glen Cove, died suddenly on May 30, 2000. A lifelong resident of Glen Cove, Evelyn was a secretary for the Glen Cove School District, starting in the old South School before moving to the Administration Building. Very active in the PTA in the 1950s, she helped to organize the first polio vaccinations for the school district. She was a past president of the Women's Club of Glen Cove and a longtime member of the congregation of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Glen Head, where she was past president of the church women's group and a member of of the Altar Guild. Evelyn and her husband Lester were also former members of the Hempstead Harbor Club. She will be sorely missed by her family; her husband Lester; daughters Karen and Lesley; son-in-law Gene Siodla; granddaughter Christine; her brother Charles Grossman; and by her many friends. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral services at Our Savior's Lutheran Church conducted by the Rev. Paul T. Johnson. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery.

Joseph W. Muldoon Jr., attorney, of Glen Cove, died on June 3, 2000. Son of Catherine and Joseph W. Muldoon Sr. Brother of Peter, Kieren and the late Jeffrey. Brother-in-law of Ann Muldoon and Bryan Krask. Uncle of Margaret Ann, Abigal Rose and Caitlyn Kieren. Arrangements were made by the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.

Charles A. Powers died on June 4, 2000 in Vero Beach, FL. Born in Paterson, NJ, in 1915, he grew up in NYC and graduated from Lawrenceville School in 1934 and Princeton University in 1938. While at Princeton he lettered in lacrosse and wrestling, winning the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships in the 155 pound class in 1937 and 1938. He served in the US Navy as an intelligence photographer during WWII.

After the war Charles persued his interest in wrestling in AAU competitions and then as chairman of the NY Athletic Club Wrestling Committee. In 1957 he founded and served as first president of the American Amateur Wrestling Foundation which raised money to promote the sport. In 1959 he led a US National team as manager on a tour of the Soviet Union where they wrestled in Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev and Tiblisi. He served as judge and referee in three subsequent Olympic Games, Rome (1960), Tokyo (1964) and Mexico City (1968).

Charles married Mary Louise (Coogie) Hourigan of Wilkes-Barre, PA, in 1940. They lived on LI before moving to Vero Beach in 1984.

Charles was chairman of the Princeton Schools and Scholarships Committees of LI and the Princeton Club of NY. He was a president of his Princeton Class of 1938 honored by them in 1965 with the Distinguished Service Award. He was also a member of the Princeton Club of Vero Beach and had served as its president.

Charles was retired chairman of the board of Powers Chemco, Inc., in Glen Cove, an international manufacturer of photographic film, chemicals and equipment for the graphic arts industry. He also served as director of Kollmorgen Corporation.

He was an active participant in the Princeton University Alumni Association and other community affairs. He was on the Committee of the Friends of the Riverside Theater and the Property Owners Association of the Moorings. A skilled and prolific photographer who documented all of his and his family's activities on prints and slides, he leaves behind at his home in Vero Beach, a library of photographic memories of his rich and productive life.

Charles was enthusiastic about tennis and boating. He was a member of the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club in Port Washington, the Creek Club in Locust Valley, and the Moorings Club in Vero Beach. He participated in six People to People Tennis Tours playing in various places in the world, including the Peoples Republic of China in 1982. He maintained boats in Sands Point and Manhasset Bay Yacht Club and then later at his home in the Moorings. He was a member of the US Power Squadron and taught seamanship courses both in Port Washington and Vero Beach.

Charles is survived by his wife, Mary Louse; his children, Charles A. Jr. of Locust Valley, Pamela M. Prokop of Port Washington and Patricia P. Woodlock of Ipswich, MA. Grandfather of Charles Augustin Powers III and Christine Louise Powers of Locust Valley, Patricia Aitkin Smith of Philadelphia, Captain David Michael Aitken currently in Bosnia, Gillian Lael Prokop of Port Washington, Pamela Powers Woodlock and Benjamin Powers Woodlock of Ipswich. Great-grandfather of David A. Smith of Philadelphia. Brother of A.J. Powers Jr. of Locust Valley, Francis C. Powers of NYC and Edward L. Powers of Miami Shores, FL.

Catherine (Toni) Perrault Cole, 80, of Brookville, died on June 4, 2000. She received her bachelor's degree from Hunter College and her nursing degree from NY Hospital Cornell School of Nursing. Catherine was a retired registered nurse. Wife of the late Dr. John Totterdale Cole. Mother of the late John Totterdale Cole Jr. She is survived by her children, Jacqueline, Jeannine (Missey) Grainger and Jeffrey. Mother-in-law of Ginny, Sara (Petey) and Andrew. Grandmother of Christian, Melissa, Keith, Heather, Jeannine, Philip, Douglas, Paul and Catherine. Great-grandmother of three. Sister of Eleanore Wexler (late David) and John Perrault (Amelia). Aunt of Johnny Perrault Jr., David Jr. and Jimmy Wexler. Arrangements were made by the Beney Funeral Home, Syosset. Funeral Mass at St. Paul the Apostle RC Church. Interment Brookville Cemetery. James H. MacDonald, 82, of Locust Valley, died on June 5, 2000. He was the proprietor of M & A Landscape Service Inc. Father of Barbara King (Ian), James E. (Colleen), Robert W. (Kia) and Mary M. Kolbert (Richard). Grandfather of Heather, Alison, Michaela, Alec and James. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Service at the Locust Valley Reformed Church. Donations can be made to the Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club.

Josephine Conti, of East Norwich, died on June 6, 2000. Wife of the late Rosario (Sal). Sister of Guy G. Ribaudo. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Maude H. Anderson, 92, of Glen Cove, died on June 7, 2000. Wife of the late Nathaniel. Sister of Irma Nixon. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and friend Francine Crawley. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Burial Nassau Knolls Cemetery.

John F. Roche, of Sea Cliff, died on June 7, 2000. A Marine Corps veteran, he was a mechanic for LILCO, Glenwood Landing. Husband of the late Wilma. Father of John, Charles (Hazel) and Elaine Roche. Grandfather of Erin Roche (Mark Koenig), Philip, Brian and Nicole Roche. Brother of William Roche. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. John P. Whalen, of Glen Cove, died on June 11, 2000. Husband of Dorothy. Father of Mary Quigley, Dorothy Whalen Bonanno, Bernadette Cain, James and the late Joan.
