First Lady and candidate for US Senator from New York Hillary Rodham Clinton came to Glen Cove last Friday to pick up an endorsement from Local 282, International Brotherhood of Teamsters Building and Construction Trades Council of Nassau/Suffolk Counties. Mrs. Clinton accepted the endorsement while standing on the Captain's Cove property, a site that is undergoing a major transformation as part of Mayor Thomas Suozzi's waterfront revitalization project. That project, which has garnered over $20 million in grant funding to clean up and reuse contaminated property with a public access to the water a main priority, will generate hundreds of union construction jobs and millions in private investment.
According to the union's president, Jack Kennedy, Mrs. Clinton is the candidate who will best represent and protect the needs of the workforce when she takes her seat in the Senate. When he successfully ran for Congress several years ago, the 60,000 member union had endorsed Rick Lazio. He is Mrs. Clinton's Republican opponent for the Senate seat which is being vacated by the retiring Daniel Patrick Moynihan.
