The people in Glen Cove who did not vote on this last school budget vote and board election, which is of primary concern to all of us; senior citizens, young parents, homeowners and renters this is for you. This election was especially important because it concerned our schools and the future of the children of Glen Cove. You did it again!
Our children and grandchildren are going to suffer the ramifications of a hind-sighted mixed group of people - old and young. Perhaps the senior citizens of Glen Cove were only thinking of the rise in their school taxes; how foolish, if you still own your home, there are tax relief programs which have not been denied to anyone. Next time you're at the Senior Citizen Center, ask about them. Get the facts first and do your own thinking. Don't let others sway you!
I'm appealing to the homeowners who no longer have children in the schools. You should realize that your property won't be worth a dime if you don't have a quality school system, a system that encourages young, prospective homeowners to live in our community.
I'd like to direct my comments to another group, those who rent and have children in our schools. Though you are not directly responsible for paying taxes, you should be interested in the quality of education your children are getting. Don't let the other guy do it!
Each and every parent of school children ought to be involved in what's being taught. These are the years that prepare children for the "real world." The curriculum of the '40s and '50s is long gone and the demands of a technologically advanced society costs money! If you do not provide for quality education, another, more grave problem looms, and that is the prospects of a "ghost town." How long will it take before the efforts of the city council to revitalize this community go down the tubes because families will be moving out! Glen Cove has always been a "family" type community. What alternative do you want?
In conclusion, may I add that I'm extremely saddened by the lack of respect for all of our veterans, old and most recent, who fought to protect our rights, especially the democratic system of the right to vote! Yes, we have hurt the ones we love the most, our children and grandchildren.
So, I ask you to please do the "right" thing when the vote comes up again next month.
