On Friday evening April 14, a softball game was played between a women's all star team (sponsored by Maccarone Plumbing) and a group of players from the Glen Cove Senior Softball Association. The GCSSA oversees the three 60-year-old and above clubs, namely the Cobras, the Rebels, and the Vikings. Players from all three teams participated in this game which was won by the men by a score of 15 to 11. The women's team displayed some terrific talent and stretched the men to their maximum before the end.
This game was a kickoff for the weekend of games played in honor of Mike DiCarlo who died earlier in the year.
On Thursday, April 27, the Glen Cove Rebels and the Glen Cove Vikings opened their respective season at the Macarone Stadium. The Glen Cove Cobras had begun their schedule two days earlier on the 25th. Present for the opening ceremonies were numerous individuals from the City of Glen Cove led by Darcy Belyea, director of recreation and special guests from various sponsors.
Assisting Kevin Kimmel (Regency Chef) in throwing out the traditional first ball were Gloria Chereck (Regency), Paul Carr (president and CEO of American Community Bank), Rosemarie Miller (assistant vice president of American Community Bank), Ed Broderick (Photocircuits), Judy Conord (manager of Human Resources, Photocircuits) and many Glen Cove well wishers.
The season will consist of each of our three teams playing 64 games. The Vikings are defending their title as champions of the league which they have achieved nine out of the last ten years. At this point we truly want to thank all of our sponsors for their wonderful support.
