After opening up a very tough week in their Division season, losing to the likes of Garden City and Wantagh, the Big Red baseball team used a 15-strikeout performance by Ricky Garcia to shut out Great Neck North 5-0 to open up a successful four-win week to even their Division record to 4-4. Ricky not only pitched, but also went 3 for 4 with two runs batted in. Also leading in the attack was first baseman Anthony Pizziatolla with two hits and one RBI.
The next day the rebels of Great Neck traveled to Glen Cove, and their hitters came alive. Being behind 5-3 into the seventh, the Big Red team had their backs to the wall. Leading off the bottom of the seventh, Garvansh Anand started the inning with a base on balls. Anthony Pizziatolla followed with a single to center for his second hit of the game. This brought up ninth grader Donnie Daniels, with the count 2 and 2, Donnie lined the next pitch to the 372 sign in straight away center field, which scored two runs to tie the score at five each as Daniels slid into third with a base-clearing triple. Next at bat was 10th grader Londell Wheeler, the right fielder. With a 2-0 count, he hit a sac fly to score Daniels with the winning run. The other hitting star of the game was Jessie Barnes who had two RBI's. Picking up the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief was Guiseppi Gallizzi.
With a chance for a sweep, the Big Red returned to Great Neck and their bats continued where they left off the day before with a 13-hit attack on the way to a 17-0 shutout. This time the shutout was pitched by sophomore Craig Hansen. Craig had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning. He finished striking out 11 batters and giving up two hits. The hitting attack was led by Londell Wheeler-four runs scored, two hits. Jessie Barnes had two hits to go along with his three RBI's. Ricky Garcia had two hits and three RBI's. Anthony Pizziatolla - two hits and three RBI's and Victor Hidalso had two hits and one RBI.
The week, however, did not end there. On Saturday Wantagh visited Big Red country bringing a record of 4-0 in the Division with a win against Glen Cove a week earlier. Glen Cove jumped on Wantagh's ace pitcher with a four-run first inning, highlighted with by a double squeeze by Donnie Daniels to score two runs. Picking up the win for his second win of the week was Guiseppi Gallizzi, who pitched a complete 5-2 victory giving up only three hits. Leading the hitting attack was Joel Basilion with two hits, Ricky Garcia with two hits and Tim Charon with two hits.
The next Big Red home game is during the spring break on Wednesday, April 26 at 11 a.m. Come on out and support Big Red baseball!
Big Red bats came alive on Thursday, April 13 in the sixth inning as Glen Cove scored three runs to take a 5-3 lead over North Shore High School. Krissy Austin led off the inning with a single. Amber Abrams and Joanna Moccia reached base on hard hit balls to second that were misplayed. Michelle DeJesus' bunt scored Abrams and Moccia. Austin led off the sixth inning with a single, followed by Joan Starkman's single. Amber Abrams was hit by a pitch loading the bases for Joanna Moccia, who ripped a double down the third base line, driving in all three base runners!
Krissy Austin was 2 for 3 and scored three runs for Glen Cove. Aubrie Dillon did an excellent job behind the plate allowing only one stolen base. The Big Red scored the victory with a final score of 8-4.
One day earlier Sacred Heart Academy traveled to Glen Cove for a non-league game. The Big Red's offense was led by Meghan D'Angelis' towering homerun in the fourth inning. She also had a double in the sixth inning. Aubrie Dillon once again did an outstanding job behind the plate and the Big Red scored the win 9-4.
The Big Red started out the week on Monday, April 10 by traveling to Clarke for an exciting 3-2 win. Glen Cove scored one run in the second inning on a passed ball. Glen Cove held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Clarke scored two unearned runs in the sixth and took a 2-1 lead. Big Red bats came alive in the top of the seventh to load the bases as Stephanie Graziosi led off with a single followed by Michelle DeJesus' single and Vanessa Machado's single. With two outs and the bases loaded, Joan Starkman blasted a single up the middle scoring Graziosi and DeJesus to give Glen Cove a 3-2 lead. DeJesus retired the order in the seventh to earn the victory. She allowed only two hits and had three strikeouts and both runs were unearned. DeJesus was hot with the bat as well, going 2 for 3 with one RBI and scored two runs. Vanessa Machado made two outstanding plays in right field. Hustling for a ball down the line and throwing out a runner at the plate in the second inning.

The Big Red boys lacrosse team shut out West Hempstead this week 10-1! The shutout was a total team effort, as every player contributed to the win. Sophomore goalie Dan Bellissimo recorded seven saves in his first career shutout. Scoring for Glen Cove were: Dave Brown (two goals, two assists), Chris Corbin (two goals), Chris Thaw (two goals), Derek Schubert (first goal of the year, two assists), Alex Gratsias (one goal), Cam Bocchino (one goal), Brian Cavallo (one goal), and Andreas Christopoulos (two assists).
The week ended with a tough loss to the Lawrence Golden Tornado 11-6. After falling behind early, the Big Red came back with goals by Dave Brown and Paul Graziosi. Alex Gratsias had the assist on both goals. Dave would go on for two more goals on the day, Derek Schubert would add another, and Alex would make the score 8-6 with 4:30 left. But it was not meant to be, as Lawrence would take advantage of the defensive pressure that the Big Red would have to use.
The Big Red now stands at 5-4.

The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team traveled to Wheatley on Thursday, April 13 and came home with a terrific 11-2 win! The team played a crossover game against a League II opponent. The team began slowly with Nicole Trotta tying the score at 1-1. Then Jaime Basile tied again at 2-2. Jackie Bruce in goal made 2 for 3 clutch saves, which sparked the team to pass quickly and accurately. At half time, the score was 4-2 Glen Cove. The girls then poured it on and made seven goals without being scored upon for the remainder of the game. Every player did her part and the pleasure they received was the finish whistle signaling a big 11-2 victory for Glen Cove!
Goal scorers for the day were: Jaime Basile (three goals - two assists), Kristie Anzalone (two goals - two assists), Erica Schor (two goals - two assists), Nicole Trotta (two goals, two assists), Laura Gabbamonte (one goal - one assist), Amanda Moretto (one goal), Amanda McCarthy (one assist) and goalkeeper, Jackie Bruce had 15 saves for a winning day!
On Saturday, April 16, the girls played another cross-conference game with the #2 team in League I (Glen Cove is in League III). The team really pulled out all the stops and played stride for stride for the beginning of the game with the score at 1-1. The game was played at an extremely fast pace and the Glen Cove girls were there all the way. At half time the score was 3-8. It was a hard-fought game and the girls played tough, aggressive lacrosse where every pass counted and they were able to break down Wantagh's defense, but Wantagh would score the win 16-6.
Goal scorers were Jaime Basile (three goals - one assist), Erica Schor (three goals), Kristie Anzalone (two assists), and goalkeeper Jackie Bruce had 10 saves for the day.

The Glen Cove Boys track team placed first in a Tri Meet with 86 points, ahead of Roslyn (40) and West Hempstead (19). Glen Cove had 10 event winners in the 16-event meets. Junior Jeff Rudloff won the 110m HH (18.9), the 200m (25.1) and the triple jump (32' 3"). Senior Dean Yep won the 100m (11.9). Senior Mike Peluso won the long jump (17' 1.5") and was second in the 100m (12.3). Senior Luke Babiarz won the 400m IH (1:08.8) and was second in the 110 high hurdles (21.5) and also ran anchor in the 4x400m. Sophomore Richard Tarver was second in the shot put (34' 10"), he was third in the 100m (12.4) and he was second in the 200m (25.7). Junior Anthony Sullivan was second in the discus (74' 3") and third in the shot put (32' 8"). Junior John Peralta won the shot put (35' 3") and won the discus (76' 2"). Freshman Tin Chin was third in the 400m IH (1:19.2). Sophomore Anthony Condello was third in the 400m (1:05.0). Sophomore Miguel Quinones won the 800m (2:28.4). Sophomore Italo Naves was fourth in the 800m (2:46.4). Junior Mike Biscardi was third in the two-mile (13:09.7). Gio Autran won the high jump. Mark Phegley was third in the discus. Other fine performances were done by Luis Bautista (400m, 4x400m), William Ng (shot put, discus), Tim Robinson (LJ, 4x400m), Eddie Robinson (800m, 4x800m) and Jerry Galante (200m, 4x400m).
