In the most exciting game this season, the boys varsity lacrosse team upset MacArthur in overtime. Under new rules, all overtime games are "sudden death" which made every second important and the outcome more satisfying. Alex Gratsias intercepted the MacArthur goalie's outlet pass, dodged the defense and fed a wide-open Dave Brown on the crease. Dave faked out the goalie and placed the ball into the goal to cap off a thrilling game.
After MacArthur opened the scoring, the Big Red would jump out to a 5-3 first quarter lead. MacArthur would use three second period goals to take a 6-5 lead, but Dave Brown would take advantage of a MacArthur penalty to tie the game in the third quarter.
MacArthur scored off the fourth quarter face-off and drew a Big Red penalty. But it was the Big Red who would score when Chris Thaw would take the face-off, pass to Dave Brown, who fed Corbin, who scored for the second time and put the Big Red ahead, 8-7. MacArthur then turned up the heat by scoring the next two goals and taking it to a 9-8 lead. With the game winding down, Corbin would complete the hat trick by tying the game with three minutes to go, setting the stage for the wild ending.
MacArthur would win the overtime face-off and ready themselves for a play. the Big Red defense tightened up and stopped the MacArthur attack. Led by goalie Dan Bellissimo, (15 saves), defensemen Chad Gleason, Brad Beisler, Dave Graziosi and Gianni Maraia successfully cleared the ball and set up Gratsias' heroics. This game did take its toll, however, as Dave Brown injured his shoulder and would have to sit out the Long Beach game. Long Beach, ranked second in the league, would take advantage of the illness and injury ridden Big Red and jump out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter. As the day went on, Long Beach could do no wrong and the Big Red fell, 14-2. Scoring for Glen Cove were Cam Bocchino and Chris Thaw. Assisting on the goals were Chris Corbin and Alex Gratsias. The team is coached by Steve Tripp and Mark Checola.
On April 5, the Big Red bats came alive against Levittown Division in the first inning on back-to-back triples by Joanna Moccia and TyYonna Zachary. Glen Cove scored another run in the fourth as TyYonna doubled and advanced to third base on Moccia's sacrifice fly to right field. Stephanie Graziosi roped a single to right center field scoring TyYonna. Division scored one run in the fourth and one in the sixth. Michelle DeJesus pitched an outstanding game allowing only three hits and striking out 5 batters. Terrific defensive plays were made by Amber Abrams at third base and Krissy Austin in centerfield. Graziosi threw out two runners trying to steal second.
Two days earlier, the Big Red had traveled to Sewanhaka High School for a hard-earned win. Glen Cove scored one run in the third inning as Krissy Austin led off with a single. On a hit and run play, Amber Abrams came through with the bat and delivered a base hit to centerfield. Krissy Austin scored on a drop third strike play on some aggressive base running. In the top of the sixth, Joanna Moccia doubled and Stephanie Graziosi drew a walk. Both runners advanced to second and third on a double steal. Sewanhaka misplayed a hard hit ball by TyYonna Zachary and Joanna Moccia scored, giving the Big Red a 2-0 lead. Pitcher Michelle DeJesus had a no hitter going for 6 strong innings. Sewanhaka broke it up in the bottom of the seventh and scored 2 runs sending the game into extra innings. With Amber Abrams on second, Joan Starkman laid down a sacrifice bunt and Abrams moved to third on the play. Starkman reached first due to a Sewanhaka error on the throw. Joanna Moccia stepped up to the plate and blasted a double scoring Abrams and Starkman. TyYonna Zachary followed with a towering two-run homer to left field to give the Big Red a comfortable 5-2 lead. Michelle DeJesus retired the Sewanhaka batters in order, to earn the victory for Big Red. DeJesus pitched an outstanding game, scattering only 2 hits over 8 innings. The girls varsity lacrosse team played Bethpage on April 5. After a rocky beginning, the girls were down 6-3 at the half. On March 30 the Big Red traveled to Locust Valley for a very tight game. Locust Valley opened the scoring in the first half and from then on it was a tug of war between the teams. Glen Cove's defense was terrific and our woman-to-woman defense was very solid. This allowed goalie Jackie Bruce to make numerous saves throughout the game. The half-time score was 4-3 Locust Valley. Glen Cove continued to play good defense, but with 6 minutes left they were down 6-3. The Big Red turned up the heat and went deep to edge their way back into the game with the firing power of Kristie Anzalone and Jaime Basile. With 23 seconds left in the game, Jaime scored the tying goal.
This was a great team effort with a great result. Goal scorers for the day were Jaime Basile, (3); Kristie Anzalone, (1); Erica Schor, (1); Laura Gabbamonte, (1). Goalie Jackie Bruce had 12 saves. The team is coached by Jacquie Gow.
