The Boys' Varsity Lacrosse Team opened the spring season on Saturday, with a win over the Mineola Mustangs, 6-3. After a Mineola goal, James Robbins put the Big Red on the scoreboard, tying the score at one, in the first quarter. Robbins then assisted on Jon Torres' first goal of the day, putting the Big Red out ahead to stay. Defenseman Dave Graziosi added another first half goal, as the Big Red led 3-2 at the half.
Dave Brown put the Big Red on the board in the third quarter, then iced the game with an assist on Torres' second goal of the day. Alex Gratsias rounded out the scoring on another Brown assist, while the Big Red was shorthanded.
On the defensive half of the field, sophomore goalie Dan Bellissimo held the Mustangs at bay, stopping 10 of 13 shots. The defensive unit of seniors Graziosi and Brad Beisler, and juniors Chad Gleeson, Giani Maraia, Nick DiScala and Sean Basdavanos, constantly pressured the Mustang offense.
Next Big Red home game is Thursday versus Locust Valley! The team is coached by Steve Tripp and Mark Checola.
The Big Red Varsity Boys' Lacrosse Team is ready for the challenges of the 2000 season. Head Coach Steve Tripp and Assistant Coach Mark Checola are optimistic for the Big Red's chances in the new millennium. Four All-Scholastic players (attackman Dave Brown, midfielder Jon Torres, defenseman Brad Beisler, and goalie Dan Bellissimo), lead the list of 12 returning lettemen.
On attack, Senior Dave Brown (26 goals, 16 assists in '99) and sophomore Chris Corbin are returning starters. Senior Kevin Birbal and juniors Andreas Christopoulos, Drake Gorham and Derek Schubert round out the potent Big Red offense.
Six returning lettermen head the list of midfielders. Seniors Alex Gratsias (17 goals, six assists), and Jon Torres (22 goals, six assists) handle the outside shooting, while senior Paul Graziosi and sophomore James Robbins are dangerous on the crease. Faceoffs will be handled by senior Chris Thaw (nine goals, three assists) and sophomore Tom Robbins. Juniors Cam Bocchino, Brian Cavallo, Jeff Digal, and Sal Martinez add much needed depth to the Big Red.
On the defensive half of the field, seniors Brad Beisler and Dave Graziosi are a perfect blend of size and speed. Juniors Sean Basdavanos, Nick DiScala, Chad Driscoll-Gleeson, and Giani Maraia round out the "long stick" squad. Patrolling the pipes is sophomore Dan Bellissimo. Dan saved an outstanding 57 percent of the shots he faced in '99.
Good luck and go Big Red!
What a way to begin the season¬the Glen Cove Girls Varsity Lacrosse team traveled to Carey High School on a cold and dreary Monday, March 20 to play their league opener. With one of their starters, Erica Schor, unavailable to play, the team rallied round, united as a group, backed each other up and beat Carey 11-10!
The team played beautifully for the first half, leading 5-1. Carey came back in the second half taking control of the game, but the Big Red never gave up, they played hard and took the game winner with 33 seconds left!

In goal, Jackie Bruce played with great confidence and poise, making 18 saves for the day.
