Two North Shore High School seniors, Amy Seng and Thomas Granieri, were honored as outstanding physical education students by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at a ceremony in December at the Milleridge Cottage. To be eligible, the students must have an "A" average in physical education, demonstrate leadership and community service, and be in good academic standing.
Amy Seng was selected for the enthusiasm, cooperative spirit and leadership she brings to physical education and the North Shore community. She is a top student, a National Merit semifinalist, and the recipient of the Harvard Book, Rensselaer and Bausch & Lomb awards.
Amy is president of the Key Club, through which she has earned over 250 hours of community service. She serves as vice president of the National Honor Society and a member of band and yearbook.
As an athlete, she is an All-Conference field hockey player and a County Qualifier in the 4x800 relay for the spring track team. All of her accomplishments and dedication to athletics earned her the honor of representing North Shore and Nassau County as one of eight women selected to attend the Women's Sport Foundation's annual banquet.
Tom Granieri has been a role model for his classmates. It is Tom's dedication that sets him above his peers in a physical education class. A quiet force in both the gym and on the playing field, he is both a hard worker and a team player.
Tom has distinguished himself as a leader in the classroom by his work ethic. Involved in all aspects of school life, Tom is an honor roll student, scholar of the month, a member of the Varsity Club, a volunteer at his church, and has received the American Legion Boy's State award.
As an athlete, he is a member of the cross country, bowling and baseball teams, and was team captain in his junior year.
According to North Shore athletic director, Laura Orticelle, "We are proud of Tom and Amy's contributions to the physical education department and are honored that they represent North Shore."
