I read the Alliance Against the Ferry's (AAF's) statement, as printed in the Record-Pilot. About the only thing that wasn't listed, as a threat to the North Shore, was the potential for terrorists to take over a ferry and hold its occupants hostage. Or, perhaps, a ferry could be used as a delivery system for nuclear weapons. Or, worse yet, they could be used as a nighttime facility to incarcerate serial killers!
I'm not a sailor, but I do know that once these ferries leave the dock they will be in Hempstead Harbor for a very short period of time, probably less than five minutes. Now, let's do the multiplication together: Eight ferries leaving and the same eight returning times the five minutes that they are under way through the harbor, seems like 80 minutes of "harbor time" in total. Wow!
And I heard that the "drunk tanks" to hold all of those who stumble off those ferries, so inebriated that they can't drive, will be located in North Shore High School's cafeteria. And what about the rumor that Mayor Suozzi is planning to convert Glen Cove Road between Northern Boulevard and the firehouse into a jet landing strip capable of handling 747s? I guess that is how the terrorists will get here. Did I miss anything, AAF?
The AAF wants us all to have a reason to oppose the ferry plan. Cars dripping oil, drunks killing local residents, little kids sailing on Sunfish getting run down by the big bad ferries. Oh, and don't forget the opportunity for nuclear terrorists to take over one of those ferries.
Stop trying to scare people, AAF!
