Letters to the editor proclaiming that the Foxwoods Ferries are not gambling ferries are insults to our intelligence. Why is it a ferry to New London? Why not New Haven, a much larger Connecticut city, also with an Amtrak connection and in direct line with the capitol of Hartford? Why not a ferry to Boston to compete with the air shuttle or Metroliner service? Why not Newport or Providence? Why not Atlantic City? There's a big transportation market. And why start a ferry service to Martha's Vineyard in the dead of winter? It's a summer resort. No one goes there in January.
The ferry is going to New London because that's the closest point to the Foxwoods' gambling casino. The people who own and operate Foxwoods, own and operate the ferry service. They're taking a lot of heat because their existing ferry operation from Orient Point to New London is choking the north fork of Long Island with automobile traffic. Ask anyone who lives out there. They're also looking at the huge population mass in Brooklyn, Queens and Nassau Counties that now have to travel through Manhattan and the Bronx, crossing bridges and paying tolls, to drive to Foxwoods. This ferry service is not for taking people to Mystic or Martha's Vineyard. If you are in favor of the ferry, fine. You are entitled to your opinion. But, please don't insult eveyone's intelligence with this absurd ruse.
