A motor vehicle accident at the tail end of the rush hour last Tuesday morning left one driver dead, with a second driver and a passenger both injured.
At around 9 a.m. on April 1, a pick-up truck traveling south on Roslyn Road crossed into oncoming traffic. The driver of a Coach USA charter bus heading north then swerved to avoid a head-on collision with the truck, instead crashing into a tree.
The pick-up truck burst into flames and the driver, Facundo R. Ponce, 43, of Glen Head, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the bus and the sole passenger were both seriously injured, trapped inside the bus. Emergency medical personnel worked to free them from the vehicle and they were taken to a local hospital. Debris flew everywhere damaging nearby vehicles, including breaking the window of a passing SUV.
According to a motorist who was traveling on Roslyn Road right before the accident occurred, the pick-up truck had been driving erratically, tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic for two miles along Roslyn Road prior to the accident. Two other witnesses traveling behind the truck said they also noticed the bizarre behavior of the driver and kept their distance.

As a fitness coach and a mother, Melissa Monteforte of Locust Valley knows how important it is to stay healthy, and how difficult it can be for women to make themselves, and their health, a priority. Wanting to help women take charge and feel more in control, she organized the Fit & Healthy Mamas Annual 5K run, now in its third year, which will take place on
Saturday, Sept. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.
“I felt like running was the best outlet when I became a mother; it’s such a great way to get fit and feel healthy and I wanted to share that with other moms,” says Monteforte, 31. “I wanted women to feel celebrated, no matter their fitness level, and to put their health first.”
