  • NEWS: Glen Cove BOE Names Interim Superintendent

    During a special meeting on Dec. 13, the Glen Cove Board of Education named Dr. Elliot Z. Garfinkel as the interim superintendent of schools. Dr. Garfinkel takes the helm on Jan. 1, 2000 and Dec. 31 is the current superintendent's last day. Board of Education president Vito Abbondondolo gave this reporter a brief resume on Dr. Garfinkel He was the assistant superintendent of schools in Rockville Centre from 1983-88; the superintendent in Oceanside from 1988-1997. Dr. Garfinkel retired in 1997 and then served as the Manhasset School District's interim superintendent until last July. Dr. Garfinkel's contract with the Glen Cove School District is from Jan 1, 2000 to July 31, 2000 and he is being paid on a per diem basis. FULL STORY

  • NEWS: Illegal Housing Addressed at 19 Pearsall

    Armed with a temporary restraining order contained within an order to show cause signed by Judge Richard McCord, the City of Glen Cove addressed an illegal housing situation at 19 Pearsall Avenue. The two family house at that address was occupied by 11 people on the first floor, (five is the maximum allowed by law), and one person in the cellar, (cellar occupancy by humans is illegal). The person in the cellar had a bed next to the furnace and oil tank. The first floor was occupied by a couple with a child along with nine men, several of whom were sleeping in the kitchen and in a walk-in closet. The smoke detectors were not working, and there was only one way out of the premises; the other had been blocked by furniture. Blankets and sheets were nailed to the ceiling to separate sleeping quarters. FULL STORY

  • SPORTS: Billiards Gallore Soccerfest Champs

    Billiards Gallore played as a team throughout the entire Soccerfest Tournament. Tremendous offense by Tricia Genova, Laura Genova and Jordan Simm led the team to victory. Jamara Clark, Briana Pascarelli, Ericka O'Dowd also contributed to the offense. The defense was comprised of Jaclyn Bialer, Cortney Casale, Catalene Aleman, Michelle Parente and Jessica Granger.
