As Glen Cove's Mayor's Trophy Tournament heads into the playoff portion of the schedule, Glen Cove residents can look with pride toward a number of Glen Cove teams that are representing the city in what has become Long Island's largest annual tournament. Among the Glen Cove teams that are at or near the top of their respective divisions, the Girls 16 & Under softball team showed its dominance by reaching the playoffs with a perfect 8-0 record.

The tournament opener saw Glen Cove score six runs in the first three innings, en route to an 8-0 shutout over East Meadow. Pitcher Michelle DeJesus tossed a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. Supporting her in the field with great defensive plays were Kristi Austin in centerfield, shortstop Joan Starkman (unassisted 6-6-3 double play), and rightfielder Justine Aquilino, who also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a triple and three RBIs. Lyndsey Testa (3 for 5, double, four RBIs) and Colleen Sikorsky (RBI single, two runs) also led the offense.

A four-run fifth inning, highlighted by Naddira Montalvo's three-run homer, sealed a 9-1 victory over HBQVB in the girls' next game. Lisa Kasyjanski also had an RBI and scored a run. Catcher Aubrie Dillon made a great throw to second in the sixth inning to nab a runner trying to steal. DeJesus went the distance, striking out 10, while allowing just two hits.

She helped her own cause in the next game, going 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI, as Glen Cove defeated East Meadow, 6-3. Austin (hit, two RBIs, two runs), Melissa Sydor (RBI single) and Starkman (2 for 2, RBI, two walks), led the offense. Catcher Colleen Sikorsky picked off the runner at third base with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to end the game.

DeJesus, Aquilino and Kasyjanski combined to toss a no-hitter (one unearned run) over Seaford, as Glen Cove won its fourth straight, 13-1. Austin (2 for 4, RBI), Starkman (double, triple, two RBIs), Testa (2 for 2, two RBIs) and Montalvo (3 for 4, double, triple, four RBIs) led the attack from the plate.

Reliever Sydor got the win in the next game, benefiting from Glen Cove's five runs in the last two innings, as they defeated HBQVB, 11-10. Austin, Sikorsky and Tyyonna Zachary each had RBI singles, while Testa (double, two RBIs) and Aquilino (hit, three runs) pitched four solid innings in relief.

Dillon (hit, run), Zachary (3 for 4, double), Kasyjanski (2 for 2, RBI) and Sikorsky (RBI single) helped lift Glen Cove to a 5-3 win over Rockville Center. DeJesus pitched another complete game, striking out 10 on the day. Seaford forfeited the next game, giving the team victory number seven.

Glen Cove's final tune-up for the playoffs resulted in a 12-3 win over Rockville Centre. The game was close going into the fourth inning, but doubles by Montalvo (2 for 5, two RBIs) and Starkman (2 for 4, three RBIs), along with a Testa (2 for 4, RBI) triple, led to a seven-run inning for Glen Cove, putting the game out of reach. Zachary (2 for 3, double, three RBIs) and Kasyjanski (2 for 4, RBI double) joined the attack, as well, in support of DeJesus' complete game (two earned runs, five hits, eight strikeouts) performance on the mound.
