"I don't recall seeing the Glen Cove Golf Course in much better condition. Our superintendent, Carmine Gentile, had done a great job in preparing the greens for this Jr. PGA tourney. It helped my putting quite a lot," said Steve Gavosto. Steve posted a second place score of 70. "I really wanted to be the top dog in this one, after all it's in my hometown - this is the course where I learned to play golf - this is where it all started for me," A number of local seniors who practice with Steve turned out to wish him good luck. "I lipped out two birdie putts which could have won it for me, Steve noted. But this season's first place win has been elusive after four tournament starts. Steve has over 25 first place finishes in his junior PGA career. This was another big entry field. The 96 players were sent out in a "shotgun" format, which was something new for the Junior Tour. PGA presiding official Terry Clemens said that the Glen Cove volunteers, led by PGA Head Golf Professional Howard Robertson, were very mobilized and accommodating. This tourney was commenced and completed in a tight playing window, even with the temperatures reaching 95 degrees with a high humidity index of 105.

"It was good to see that a lot of my teammates from Lutheran Middle/HS were participants and playing well," Steve observed. Shigehi Abe, Tim Lamb and Jimmy Esatto of Lutheran all posted scores in the 70s. "I think that LuHi (Lutheran) was well represented more than any other school," Steve proudly exclaimed. Steve will be returning to LuHi in the fall as a high school freshman. "I guess I'm going to have to try and climb the mountain again next week either at Bethpage or at the Lake Success PGA Junior Tournaments to get a first place win." The PGA Met Section as well as all the participants thanked the City of Glen Cove for use of their facilities as well as organizing such a successful event.
