Residents of the Glengariff Health Care Center were served a unique specialty with golden gloves on April 7 by their chef, Sue Peters. In addition to the normal 900 daily meals that include breakfast, lunch and dinner specialties Peters added a course in boxing.

Peters, an East Northport resident, who is the director of Food Services at the Glengariff Health Care Center, will be throwing her chef's hat into the ring Friday, April 9, as a contender in the Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament at the Theater at Madison Square Garden before 5,000 people.

On March 15 Peters earned her place in the Garden by winning a semi-finals event in the Bronx in the Featherweight division. Peters, 33, who is 101 pounds of fighting muscle, packs a good-quick jab and powerful right cross will enter the Garden as a finalist Friday night.

Her stunning victory in the Bronx was not news to her co-workers who suggested she become a boxer based upon her ability to fling 30-pound boxes of carrots around the Glengariff kitchen. In fact, her trainer Frank Pena, a housekeeper at the facility, is the one who convinced her to try out a few moves at The Glen Cove Police Boxing Club. "I have always been active in sports, so when Frank and my friend Lisa came to ask if I would try out, I said yes," Peters said.

"I can not believe how supportive everyone has been," said Peters. Once the news of her victory reached Glengariff residents and employees, Peters has not been able to keep up with the requests to view a video of her winning the bout. "We decided to give our residents a ring side view of what boxing is all about with today's demonstration," said Michael Miness, executive director of the Glenhaven Health Care Organization and The Glengariff Health Care Facility.

Peters is one of 120 women amateur boxers who has paved the way for women to participate in the sport since the first women boxers entered the Golden Gloves ring in 1985, according to the sponsor, the Daily News. The Golden Gloves has been holding tournaments each year since 1927.
