Leah R. Klein, longtime resident of Glen Cove, died at her home in Mountain View, CA, on Aug. 16, 1998. Mrs. Klein taught mathematics in Glen Cove's High School and Middle School for more than 20 years.

Born in NYC and edcuated in its public schools, Mrs. Klein graduated from the University of Minnesota's Institute of Technology at the age of 19 and then pursued graduate studies at Columbia University. Married during WWII, she and her husband were members of the scientific staff of the Division of War Research and worked on classified projects involving offensive and defensive weaponry.

Shortly after the war and the birth of her children, Mrs. Klein decided to spend the rest of her occupational life in teaching mathematics to young people. To that end, she attended Adephi University and received certification in both science and mathematics. She elected to teach mathematics which she termed the "Queen of Science" and always tried to impart that feeling to her students.

After retirement, Mrs. Klein was an active member of the North Nassau Chapter of the Brandeis University National Women's Committee, serving as its president for three terms.

Mrs. Klein is survived by her husband, Marvin, a retired engineering consultant, two sons, Daniel, a physician, and David, a printing broker, and two grandchildren.

Christopher Pappas, age 72, of Lebanon, NJ, died on Oct. 23, 1998. Born Feb. 3, 1926, he lived in Glen Cove for 35 years before retiring to New Jersey. He was a veteran of WWII. Surviving are his mother, Helen J. Pappas; his wife, Helen M. Pappas; his daughter, Lorraine Mitchell of Columbus, MD and her husband John; a son, Christopher Pappas Jr. and his wife Laura; and three grandchildren, Ian, Wade and Jenna. Funeral service was held in Piscataway, NJ and burial at Locust Grove Cemetery, Quakertown, NJ.

Vincenzo Oppedisano, of Glen Cove, died on Oct. 31, 1998. Husband of Josephine. Father of Maria Sceni, Giuliana Macedonio, Joseph, Frank, Angelo and Anthony Oppedisano. Grandfather of four. Great-grandfather of three. Arrangements were made by the Marcus L. Bianconi Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Rocco. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery.

Ralph Parrone, of Kings Park formerly of Glen Cove, died on Nov. 9, 1998. Husband of the late Josephine Comitino. Father of Robert (Debra) and the late Ralph. Grandfather of Jacquline, Alexandra and Nicholas. Arrangements were made by the Marcus L. Bianconi Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Rocco. Interment Hillside Cemetery.

Mildred Holtz, 81, of Great Neck, died on Nov. 10, 1998. She was a woman of resilance and very active in her community and temple for 40 years. She was chairperson of the large-type program for the partially-sighted, sponsored by Temple Beth El of Great Neck, for the Industrial Home for the Blind. She was also a member of the Gesher Group at the temple.

Mildred Holtz was the mother of Helene Holtz, former councilwoman of Glen Cove and president of Singles with a Purpose group at the Glen Cove City Hall; and Gary Wood, an actor living in California, who is currently co-starring in the TV show Air America.

Her resounding attitude was an inspiration to her friends, her family and other cancer patients.

Mary Eileen Quinn, of Smithtown formerly of Glen Cove, died on Nov 11, 1998. Born in Brooklyn, she was a housewife. Wife of the late William. Mother of Mary Jane (James) Moran, Patricia Scordato, William (Mary), Jack (Diane), Kevin (Pattie). Grandmother of 13. Great-grandmother of eight. Sister of Harold, Jane Shoemaker, Joan Tuohy and the late Bert. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Mary's RC Church. Interment St. John's Cemetery. Contributions can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital Fund or the Diabetes Foundation.

Charles J. Stanco, of Glen Cove, died on Nov. 14, 1998. WWII veteran under Gen. Douglas MacArthur and Purple Heart recipient. Husband of Evelyn. Father of Marco (Mary Ann) and Charles (Mary). Brother of Carmela, Virginia Orlando, the late Theresa Bruno, Louis, Angelina Di Leo and Amato. Grandfather of Lisa and Brian. Great-grandfather of Nicole and Michelle. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Mass celebrated at St. Rocco's RC Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.

Ruth McGuire, of Glen Cove, died on Nov. 14, 1998. Born in Jersey City, NJ, she was a nurses' aid at Glen Cove Community Hospital. Wife of the late Eugene J. Mother of Eugene B. (Lillian), Ruth Ann (Emerson), Sofee, Kathleen (Bill) Shields, Mary (Jack) Lynch, Anna May (John) Rumm, Francis (Rosemary), Margaret (Richard) Reynolds, Bernard (Karen), Michael, Edward (Ellen). Grandmother and great-grandmother. Also survived by brother-in-law Joseph Novak and sister-in-law Mary McGuire and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's RC Church. Interment East Hillside Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the Sea Cliff Fire Dept. Ambulance Squad. Ruth's family wishes to express their appreciation to the Sea Cliff Fire Dept., her neighbors, our co-workers and friends for their love, kindness and support.

Benjamin (Benny Steve) Sorocenski Sr., formerly of Glen Cove, died on Nov. 17, 1998. He was an exempt member of the Glen Cove Fire Dept. Beloved husband of the late Tessie. Devoted father of Regina (Stanley) Wasilewicz, Wanda Nilsson, Theresa Balicki, Benjamin Jr., Joseph and Stanley. Grandfather of seven. Great-grandfather of five. Visitation at the M.A. Connell Funeral Home, 434 New York Ave., Huntington, on Thursday and Friday. Mass at St. Elizabeth's Church, Huntington on Saturday. Burial following.
