The Big Red lost a heartbreaker last Saturday against the Mineola Mustangs, 6-0. The scoring took place early in the first half as the two teams locked into a defensive struggle. Even though the Big Red had their undefeated season ended, the defense stepped up and played a superb game. Defensive end Dave Graziosi totaled three quarterback sacks, while linebackers Jason Watson, Guido Penafiel and Jon Torres went sideline to sideline making tackles. The defensive front was also rock-solid. Mark Norman, Ian McCloskey, Brad Beisler and Angelo Fillippone held off a hefty Mustang line. The Mustangs were held to 135 total yards, 93 rushing and 42 passing. Unfortunately, the Big Red was also held to 135 total yards, 120 rushing and 15 through the air. Doni Baskin bustled away for 72 yards on 16 rushes. Quarterback Dustin Grosso scrambled for 40 yards on 8 carries. Glen Cove sorely missed their starting tailback, Matt Capobianco, who is still recovering from an ankle injury which occurred at the end of last week's game against Great Neck North.
The Big Red's playoff hopes took a major hit due to this loss. This weekend the team plays #1 Wantagh at Wantagh and needs a win or tie to lock in a date at the Hofstra University playoffs. If the Big Red loses, their playoff fate will be determined by the outcome of the other games played in the conference. Fan support is of the utmost importance at this week's game. We need all our Glen Cove fans at Wantagh High School at 2 p.m. this Saturday. (Take the Southern State to Wantagh Ave. South to Beltagh Avenue West). Come and show your support and cheer our Big Red football team on to the playoffs.
