(The following letter to Mayor Suozzi is here at the writer's request.)
I believe the time has come for the City of Glen Cove to follow the lead of the City of Long Beach and prohibit the use of leaf/grass/debris blowers. All too often, the blowers are used to "relocate" grass clippings and leaves from lawns to the public streets and in turn to the road drainage (sewer) system. This debris decomposes and clogs the sewers so they overflow and this debris is replaced on the public roads making for dangerous driving conditions.
Additionally, I for one am tired of having debris blown at my cars whenever I pass a house/business property being tended to by a landscaper. At a minimum, the blower should be "re-aimed" to blow debris toward the center of the land parcel and a mower (with a bag attached) used to pick up the debris. This debris should then be carted away and disposed of properly. Better yet, use the mower to pick up the debris and negate the noise and mess created by the blower.
The residents of Glen Cove devote a lot of time towards beautification and the results have really been great. However, when you traverse the roadways of Glen Cove and find them green with grass clippings or covered with leaves from a landscaper's blower, something is wrong.
I trust you will have the City Council review this request.
