The Glen Cove Cardinals began play in the 1998 Tommy Agee and Ed Kranepool Baseball Tournament on Friday, Sept. 11 with an impressive 15-to-5 victory over a very tough Bayville team. The Cardinals won the inaugural tournament last year with an 8 win, no loss, one-tie record and picked up where they left off last year. Fred Benyo, Brian Martone and Andrew Hahn led the offense and Jirag Hampton and Eric Szotska provided excellent pitching.

On Sunday they continued their winning ways in the American Baseball Association Fall Tournament with an impressive 12-1 victory over the Sachem Braves. Anthony Mateo went the distance on the mound, striking out 13 and chipped in offensively with a Marc McGuire-like grand slam home run and six RBIs. Danny Riveria also led the way with the bat and provided three hits.

The second game was a pitcher's duel that ended after seven innings in a 2-2 tie. Chris Oglesby pitched three fine innings and knocked in the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a scoreless extra inning the game was called because of darkness. John Maccarone pitched four innings of scoreless ball in relief and Bruce Testa excelled both offensively (two doubles) and defensively at shortstop. Manager Bruce Testa was extremely happy with the boys' progress and looks forward to a fine fall season.
