(The following was sent to Mayor Suozzi and is printed here by request.)
In the movie Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner is told by a mysterious voice to build a ballfield in the middle of nowhere. "Build it and they shall come" he is told. Despite the doubters and naysayers, he builds his field of dreams and the movie concludes with a long line of cars coming to his field. We in Glen Cove are fortunate that you have dared to dream. With the success and long lines of cars coming to Glen Cove, you have proven what you have often said - If you give people a reason to come to Glen Cove, they will come. And come they did, as evidenced by the number of people I saw in Glen Cove during this extraordinary event.
While I am certain the critics will find something to criticize, the reality is that you and the City of Glen Cove successfully hosted one of the major events on Long Island this year. The City was able to showcase its historic beauty, its unique waterfront, and its residents who volunteered countless hours and answered countless questions during this event.
On behalf of the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and General Membership, I would like to thank you for your vision and perseverance in arranging for the Americas' Sail '98 to come to Glen Cove. We are not sure how you also managed to arrange the great weather which could not have been better. We believe that everyone who came to see the tall ships had a great time once they arrived at Morgan Park. You have put Glen Cove on the map.
The Chamber truly appreciates all that you do for the people and businesses of the City of Glen Cove. Again thank you!
