Greg E. Mathieson, the president and chief still photographer of the MAI Photo News Agency, was born and raised in Glen Cove. Many people in Glen Cove will recognize his name for many reasons. One being he graduated from Glen Cove High School. Another reason is that while in high school, Greg freelanced as the photographer for this newspaper and in 1971, he was named the official photographer for the City of Glen Cove by the city council. Greg captured the teachers' strike, race riots and shootings back then and, though not appreciated by the district's administration, he continued to cover local events for the Record-Pilot. Yet another reason could be that people have seen his photo credits on the cover of Life Magazine, Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, US News & World Report, Der Speigel and many more. Or maybe they know he has worked directly with the White House, Secret Service and various federal agencies to obtain the best possible coverage from all corners of the world.

Greg went right into the Army upon his graduation from Glen Cove High School and continued to freelance as a photographer for UPI and many other publications. Greg married Maura Smith, also a Glen Cove native, in September, 1975. After a decade in the military he returned to civilian life in 1981 with an Honorable Discharge and started his own business working for many of the world's news publications covering military around the world and politics such as the White House, US Congress, US State Department and later also doing contract work for government agencies and corporations. He has worked on numerous television specials for ABC and NBC. While Greg was away covering Desert Storm, his son, Greg. E. "Chip" Mathieson, Jr. was born.

Chip is now 7 years old and will be attending second grade at the Centreville Elementary School in Virginia, where he lives with his parents. During the last few months his dad has taken him on some of his less risky local assignments to get a firsthand education. Last fall, father and son visited NASA at the Kennedy Space Center where Chip's classmate's dad, who holds the record for walks in space, is based. Chip has visited the USS Miami submarine and a Stealth F-117 bomber. But the best visits are those Chip takes with his parents to Glen Cove for a visit with his grandparents, Virginia and Everett Mathieson and Jack Smith and great- grandmother Elenor Gallo.

Greg Mathieson, Sr. tried his best to get time off and bring Chip up to Glen Cove in time for the Tall Ships and Founders Day Celebrations. He was able to come home for a short visit to a place the family misses sorely. Greg, Sr. continues to do military things like going out with the US Navy SEAL teams and the USS Maine, a trident missile submarine somewhere in the Atlantic. He has worked as a reserve public affairs officer for FEMA and handled the Grand Forks ND floods last year as well as the mudslides in California the beginning of this year. Maura has been a nurse at the Fairfax Hospital in Virginia for 18 years and is currently the assistant patient care director. No matter where the Mathiesons may go, Glen Cove is still their home and there's no place like it.
