  • NEWS: St. Rocco's Welcomes Father Aaron to Glen Cove

On June 24, the Church of St. Rocco in Glen Cove welcomed a new pastor as Monsignor Domenick Graziadio left to serve the parish of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Deer Park. Father Aaron T. • NEWS: Hello, Glen Cove From the Greg E. Mathiesons

Greg E. Mathieson, the president and chief still photographer of the MAI Photo News Agency, was born and raised in Glen Cove. Many people in Glen Cove will recognize his name for many reasons. One being he graduated from Glen Cove High School. Another reason is that while in high school, Greg freelanced as the photographer for this newspaper and in 1971, he was named the official photographer for the City of Glen Cove by the city council. Greg captured the teachers' strike, race riots and shootings back then and, though not appreciated by the district's administration, he continued to cover local events for the Record-Pilot. Yet another reason could be that people have seen his photo credits on the cover of Life Magazine, Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, US News & World Report, Der Speigel and many more. Or maybe they know he has worked directly with the White House, Secret Service and various federal agencies to obtain the best possible coverage from all corners of the world. FULL STORY

  • SPORTS: Dragon Boat Race Goodwill

On Sunday, July 12, the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce held its annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Races at the Jude Thaddeus Glen Cove Marina. This year the Races were part of "Americas Sail '98" events. The Races involve 2 forty-foot wooden canoes each manned by a team of 20. Each race covers a distance of about 500 meters. There were 10 teams this year in the competition and about 500 spectators (including 200 team members). The teams were: East Meadow Fire Department, Erin/Edwards Communications, Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club, Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, Photocircuits Corporation (2 teams), Senior Quarters at Glen Cove, the Libertad, Paddy's Paddlers, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the Boys and Girls Club teams and others helped to upright the boats which weigh about 2,000 pounds each! It was a cooperative and enthusiastic effort to say the least. The final heats were held among the top 4 teams who paddled the best racing times. The 2 finalists were the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club and the Libertad. The Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club won the overall race (first place) and the crew of the Libertad placed second. FULL STORY
