On Monday, April 6, Glen Cove Police Department Detective John Nagle and Rookie Police Officer David Sucharski arrested Miguel Guardado, 22, on Landing Road. According to police, Guardado had acted in consort with members of the La Mara Salvatrucha, (MS-13), gang in the shooting death of Rigoberto Reyes on March 29 in Mineola. Upon his arrest, which included the participation of Nassau County Homicide Detectives Lesmeister, Trujillo and Kuhn, Guardado was charged with gang assault, first degree and manslaughter, first degree. He is being held without bail and police say he has prior arrests for assault and robbery. Police are continuing their investigation because there may be another suspect in the shooting incident.
Reyes and Guardado had been friends until each one joined a rival El Salvadoran gang. Reyes was a member of the Salvadorans With Pride, (SWP), gang which is as particularly violent as the MS-13 gang. Detective Nagle had received information on Guardado's whereabouts through the ongoing investigation which followed the death of Reyes. Guardado is believed to be in this country illegally and was living with his relative here in Glen Cove. Police believe that the two gangs prey on each other for the most part, as they harbor an intense hate for one another.
The Glen Cove Police Department said they and the Nassau County Police Department have been networking and are definitely on top of any gang activity taking place in the county. If anyone has any information regarding this kind of activity an anonymous phone call can be made to the Glen Cove Police Department.
