Garden City Meets The New York Mets

Ron Darling and Darryl Strawberry

appear at Citibank

New York Mets fans haven’t had too much to be excited about this season. The team is currently under .500 and struggling to stay in the postseason race. So when two former Mets who played on the magical 1986 World Series championship team came to Garden City last Friday, fans had the opportunity to relive the memories and smile.

As part of the Meet Mr. Met Tour, former Mets Ron Darling and Darryl Strawberry joined the Mets mascot, Mr. Met, at Citibank on Franklin Avenue for a meet and greet event.

A line of hundreds of fans spanned from inside the Citibank branch, out the front door, and wrapped around the corner on Franklin Avenue as attendees waited to meet two of the Mets who brought them their most recent World Championship.

Many of the fans on line wore Mets jerseys and caps, and some even wore Yankee colors. They carried baseballs, photos, programs, cards, and many other types of memorabilia to get signed as Citibank employees tried to keep everything in order.

Once the fans got up close with Darling and Strawberry, it was time to talk and relive the memories. One fan in a Yankees shirt remarked that Strawberry, a former Yankee as well, doesn’t look as old as he is. “I feel old,” Strawberry jokingly told her.

Over the 90-minute appearance, Strawberry and Darling signed as many autographs as they could, making sure everyone went home happy. Fans even had the opportunity to enter a contest for tickets to a Mets game.

The Meet Mr. Met tour is still going on throughout the summer. For more information, visit mets.com
