Registration For Summer Camps Begins

Registration has begun for the recreation department’s summer camps. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Please pay careful attention to the age/grade requirements as they are strictly enforced.

Summer brochures may be downloaded from the website at www.gardencityrecreation.org. To register, pick up a summer brochure at the recreation office, St. Paul’s, Community Park, or download it from www.gardencityrecreation.org. You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the session and classes for which you are registering with a first and second choice. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 108 Rockaway Ave. Make sure you are making the check out to the correct entity as listed on the application. Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable.

Pre-School Camp

The pre-school camp is a fun way for children ages 3 ½ to 5 years old who are residents of the village to spend the summer. Children who attend this camp MUST be 3 ½ years old by the start of the session. Arts and crafts, music, nature, and stories will fill the 2-hour class, run by Pat Leonenko, St. Joseph’s pre-school teacher.

Pee Wee Tennis

Pee Wee Tennis is offered to children who are village residents ages 4 to 6. Eligibility is determined by the child’s age at the start of the session. Skills are learned by fun and easy to do drills taught by our tennis staff. Each child may register for a maximum of two sessions.

Softball Camp

This softball camp will teach young aspiring players entering grades 3 through 7 the basic skills of softball. Every aspect of the game will be covered including hitting, fielding, base running, pitching, and more. Team play will be emphasized. The goal of this camp is for young athletes to improve their over all self confidence and knowledge of the game.

When: July 8-11

Girls’ Volleyball Camp

This camp will provide instruction in skills necessary to compete in the sport of volleyball. The children will learn proper techniques in serving, hitting, and passing and well as the aspects of the game. This camp will be held in St. Paul’s Field House and is open to any resident of the Village of Garden City who is entering grades 6-10 in September.

NEW – US Sports Institute Lacrosse Squirts Camp For 4–6-Year-Olds

The US Sports Institute Lacrosse Squirts Camp is a wonderful introduction to the sport of lacrosse, designed for beginner players who have little or no experience in the sport. The program is taught in a relaxed atmosphere with the emphasis on fundamental skills and technique; helping all children to progress and succeed. Children will learn how to play lacrosse through a series of fun activities, and then take part in small scrimmages to put into practice what they have learned.

All equipment is provided for the program that makes it a more affordable way for children to learn the game. The program is non-contact, so no protective clothing is required.

When: Week of July 15–18 from 1:30–3 p.m.

Tennis Camps For Ages 6–14

The recreation department’s tennis camp program offers children aged six and up an opportunity to learn or advance their tennis skills while working with experienced tennis pros in a fun setting. The camps are set by age and children will be grouped according to ability within their camp. All sessions are held at the Community Park tennis center. The age of the child at the start of the session will determine which session the child may attend and proof of age may be required. Please read the information below to determine which camp your child is eligible to attend.

Novice Camp – For ages 6 and 7. This camp will teach serving, rallying, and the basics of a tennis game, keeping it fun for the younger tennis set.

Junior Camp – For ages 8–12. For all levels of experience, this 2 ¼ hour camp will group players by ability so that everyone can move to the next level.

Time: 10 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

Cost: $100 (July 1–3 is $75)

Junior Camp Plus - For the child aged 8 to 10 that is looking for a full day of tennis. This camp will provide tennis instruction in the morning, followed by lunchtime and a special activity, then ending the day with tennis matches. Children must bring their lunch to this camp.

Time: 10 a.m.-2:15 p.m.

Cost: $220 (July 1–3 is $150)

Senior Camp - For ages 11 to 14. For all levels of experience.

Time: 1 – 2:30 p.m.

USSI Field Hockey Camp

US Sports Institute will conduct a Summer Field Hockey Camp for girls ages 9-13 that are residents of the Village of Garden City. Campers will be taken through all phases of the game, thoughtfully integrating technical and tactical components in a fun, innovative way. The camp will focus on individual skill development and the rules of the game, as well as the importance of playing together as a team. Players will be grouped by age, playing ability and experience level. No previous experience playing field hockey is required to attend the First Play Field Hockey Camp. Equipment will be supplied.

Bricks4Kidz – A Lego Camp Experience for 5–8-year-olds

Children ages 5–8 will sample models from over two dozen different themes such as Super Hero Academy, Amusement Park, Mindstorm Robotics and Space Adventures. They will be encouraged and challenged to innovate and invent their own models or customize existing models to express their individual creativity. Children will be broken into groups by and age and building skill ability.

When: Aug. 12–15

Time: 9–11:30 a.m.

US Sports Institute Multi-Sport Camp For Ages 5-12

The recreation department is pleased to work in conjunction with the US Sports Institute to offer several programs this summer. Experience many different sports in one week in a fun and exciting setting at the Multi-Sport Camp. Instruction will be given in each sport culminating in a game situation. After a half hour lunch break, the children will return to participate in USSI’s “Olympic Games” and World Cup. Participants in the full-day camp will receive all of the above plus several additional sports and challenges.

The camp will be held at St. Paul’s and is divided into a half or full day camp as follows:

Multi Sports (also called Total Sports)

Half-day morning camp for ages 5–12 (9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)

US Sports Institute Soccer Camp For Ages 5-13

A Sports Institute’s Soccer Camp will also be offered this summer. This program is broken into two divisions:

First Play Soccer Camp-This soccer day camp pushes the fun factor for children ages 5 to 12 while improving their soccer skills. Each child will be assigned a World Cup country for the week. They will then learn soccer skills from a different country each day and put them to the test with fun challenges and games.

Premier Play–Where Champions are made. This unique day camp gives travel soccer players ages 8–13 training just like the youth development academies in Europe without having to leave home. During the week, players will enjoy various soccer activities used by professional clubs including speed and agility training, and small-sided futsal sessions. Players will also perform daily skills challenges and complete a personal progress report for the week. Official scrimmages will be played under the guidance of US Sport Institute’s professional coaches, ensuring the player’s understanding the tactics of soccer. While this camp is geared for the serious player, the emphasis is on learning in an enjoyable environment that promotes self-confidence.

Youth Basketball Camp

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting a youth basketball camp for boys and girls who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City and entering 1st through 6th grades in September. Come join up and learn what it takes to pass, dribble and shoot in this camp. The purpose of this program is to provide instruction in self improvement, basketball fundamentals, team play, group cooperation, and most important of all, FUN! !

When: Week of Aug. 5-8

Where: St. Paul’s Field House

Time: 8:30–10:30 a.m. For children entering 1st and 2nd grades

11 a.m.–1 p.m. for children entering 3rd-6th grades

Fee: $75

Boys And Girls Lacrosse Camp

For children entering 1st through 6th grades in September. Here is an opportunity for youngsters who are residents of the Village of Garden City to learn the techniques of catching, throwing, scooping, and shooting through fun drills. They will also learn the rules of the game by scrimmaging. This is a basic camp where no experience is necessary and equipment is provided.

When: Week of July 1-3

(3 days, no class on July 4-5)

Where: St. Paul’s field

Time: 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. for children entering 1st and 2nd grades

11 a.m.–1 p.m. for children entering 3rd-6th grades

Recreation Soccer Camp

This instructional program will be offered for boys and girls entering grades 1 through 6. This camp will be held at Community Park.

The two-hour session will run from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., at a cost of $75 and will focus on individual skill development. The five-hour session will run from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at a cost of $160. The five-hour session will include an hour lunch break and recreation session supervised by the soccer camp staff, to be followed by full field games.

Equipment Needed: Cleats or sneakers, shin guards, and a soccer ball and lunch with drink if attending full day program.

When: Week of July 29–Aug. 1

Where: Garden City Community Park

Time: 9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m. or 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Fee: $75 for morning session

 $160 for 5-hour session

Youth Baseball Camp

The recreation department will again conduct a summer baseball camp for boys and girls that are residents of the Village of Garden City.

This instructional program is offered for boys and girls in 1st through 6th grades. The camp will focus on individual skill development, and the importance of playing together as a team.

Youngsters in each age category will be divided into appropriate skill levels and will receive group instruction.

Equipment Needed: Baseball glove, sneakers or rubber cleats

Time: Choice of 8:30–10:30 a.m. or

Yoga For Youngsters

The recreation department’s certified yoga instructor will offer yoga classes for boys and girls who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City ages 6-14. Children attending this program will learn movements, postures, and breathing techniques that will help with relaxation, self awareness, and fitness.

When: Week of August 12 -15

Where: St. Paul’s Cluett Hall

Time: 9–10 a.m. entering grades 1-3

10:15–11:30 a.m. entering grades 4-7

Computer Workshops For Kids Entering Grades 4–7

These Computer Workshops are being run by Sharper Training Solutions, a company that the recreation department has used for years with the village’s senior population. The children’s program being set up through them will cover topics that are useful in everyday life and enjoyable for the age group.

Connecting With Nature….
Camp That Explores The Living Things Around Us

The Recreation Department and the Garden City Bird Sanctuary are joint venturing to offer a camp experience “Connecting with Nature”. Children ages 6-12 are invited to spend the morning at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary learning about how they can work hand-in-hand with nature. This one-week, two-hour program will meet at Nassau Haven Park and then move into the sanctuary, with walks, crafts, and take homes for each child involved.

When: Ages 6-8
