Roller Hockey Registration Begins

The Garden City Recreation Department is proud to announce the start of registration for Fall Roller Hockey. Whether you played last season or haven’t played in a couple of years, now is the perfect time to sign up and experience all the fun. Our Sunday sessions will begin on Sept. 12 and Friday sessions will begin on Sept.17. All programs take place at Community Park’s Roller Rink.

In-person registration began at the Administrative Office at 108 Rockaway Ave., on Friday, Aug. 27. Applications may be picked up at the Recreation Office or downloaded off the Recreation’s website at www/gardencityrecreation.org. All checks should be made payable to “Inc. Village of Garden City.”

A reminder: Each participant is required to wear full equipment at all times. This includes hockey helmet with cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, roller blades, hockey stick, long pants, and a protective cup.

A description of each program offered is as follows:

Learn & Play Program Roller Hockey Clinic

This eight-week program has been designed to introduce the exciting game of Roller Hockey for children ages 5-7. No experience is required in hockey or rollerskating as this is a Beginners Program. This hour-long clinic will take place on Sunday afternoons at 12:45 and 2 p.m.

Recreation Department Leagues

Our Roller Hockey Leagues are broken into age groups. Please pay careful attention as our age groupings and dates/times have changed.

Mites Division is for 6- and 7-year-olds who have basic skating skills. Since this division is games only, if your child is new to the sports, you should register them for the learn and play clinic. Games will take place on Sunday afternoons with either a 3:15 or 4:30 p.m. start, depending on your child’s team schedule.

Junior Division – ages 8 through 10 will play on Friday afternoons with either a 4 or 5:30 p.m. start depending on your child’s team schedule.

Senior Division – ages 11 through 13 will play on Friday evenings at either 6:45 or 8 p.m. depending on your child’s team schedule.

High School Open Hockey: for ages 14 to 16. Games will be played on Sundays at 5:30 p.m. in a “pick-up” format.

Adult Division for ages 30 and over – games will take place on Sunday evenings at 7:15 p.m. with an occasional “Friday night under the Lights.” Games are in “pick-up” format.
