The Garden City Recreation Dance Conservatory held its annual Showcase Friday, June 5, at Adelphi University’s beautiful Olmstead Theater.
The Garden City Centennial Soccer Club will be opening their fall season on Saturday, Sept. 12.
A record-breaking field of 349 runners and walkers crossed the finish line at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School at the 6th annual Heart & Sole 5 Kilometer Run on Sunday morning, July 12, and Garden City’s own Karen Pompay scored as the first woman overall.
The Garden City Recreation Department will open the Field House on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 10 p.m. for open basketball time. This program is open to ages 18 and older who are residents of the Village of Garden City. Games are strictly “pickup.” This program will continue until Aug. 19.
On June 3, students and staff at Homestead School celebrated the value of running as part of a healthy and active lifestyle. This first-time initiative was centered on the idea that running is for everyone!

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that on Monday, July 13 Jones Beach State Park is hosting the Junior Lifeguard Tournament. This is the sixth year that this prestigious tournament will be held at Jones Beach State Park.
Applications are now available for the Recreation Department’s men’s and women’s summer softball leagues. Contact Steve Espey at Community Park for an application or for more information at 483-2525. Play will begin the last week in June. The fee for the season is $500 per team. One of our women’s team’s is looking for players. If you are 18 or over and want to play slo-pitch softball give us a call at Community Park at 483-2525.
GCAA, an entity that has been running sports in Garden City for over 50 years, is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 basketball season. The application can be downloaded from the GCAA website, www.gc-aa.com. Please sign up early as the number of registrants will determine the amount of court time GCAA receives. By signing up now, you lock in the discounted rates of $40 for the K-1 clinics and $60 for intramurals. The rates increase by $10 on Sept. 1 and late fees apply after Oct. 1. The intramural season starts in early December and runs through the middle of March 2010.
