With a sudden venue change from Budapest to the United States, Garden City’s own Mark Staniszewski, along with teammates Ken Meadows (Babylon) and Maria DiDio (Farmingdale), packed their gear and headed off to the World Masters Judo Championships held Aug. 19-23 at the International Convention Center in Atlanta.
Due to popular demand, the Recreation Department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The class will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Sept. 18. Our classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s. The cost of the 10-week program will be $105 (supplies are bought on your own- a supply list will be handed out at the first class).
The fourth grade boys basketball team won the fifth-grade Rockville Centre Outdoor Basketball League Championship by beating a strong fifth-grade Rockville Centre team 31-27 on Friday, Aug. 21 in the championship game.
On Friday, Aug. 21, the seventh-grade boys team won the outdoor Rockville Centre Summer Basketball Championship by beating St. Agnes 42-41 in overtime.After being down 13-2 in the first quarter, the team mounted an aggressive comeback with full court defensive pressure creating steals and scoring opportunities.
The Recreation Department’s Tennis Program for children has set its schedule for the fall. Classes will begin in late September and registration will be by mail only beginning Friday, Sept. 11.
Sixteen-year-old Chaminade High School speedster Will Slattery of Garden City, who was the third place finisher in the 2008 Sands Point Sprint for the Feinstein Institute, outduelled Terence McElhatton this year to score a big win in the record breaking Sands Point Run on August 15.
Dancing Under the Stars with the New York Connection was rained out and has been rescheduled for Friday, Aug. 28, at 6 p.m. Please mark your calendars.
The people of Garden City have always been proud of its sports and a new generation is ready to take up the gauntlet. The Garden City Bombers youth baseball team has completed a summer season in which they played more than 25 games against other 7 and under teams from around Nassau and Queens, and is preparing to move up to 8 and under competition for the fall baseball season.
The summer is winding down and there are many exciting events going on at the miniature golf course this month.
