LI Marathon Set for May 15K Race, Others to Take Place April 30

Written by Garden City Life Editorial Staff Friday, 25 March 2011 00:00

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and RXR Realty Chief Executive Officer Scott Rechler called on runners and non-runners alike to take steps to maintain a healthy heart, as they recently promoted the upcoming 2011 RXR/ TIAA-CREF Long Island Marathon.

Mangano and Rechler were joined by officials from the American Heart Association and Alan Powell, who recently recovered from a heart attack and open-heart surgery. Powell, 39, will celebrate his recovery by running in the 5K race as part of the Marathon Festival of Races. The 5K is one of several races being run on Saturday, April 30, and the Marathon will take place on Sunday, May 1.

Despite its status as one of the most affluent and well-educated areas in New York State, Nassau County actually has a higher rate of cardiovascular disease than the state as a whole, with 356 incidents per 100,000 population, according to recent statistics covering the years 2005 to 2007. By contrast, New York State’s rate is 318 and New York City’s is 323.

Lady Trojans Win Nassau Class A Championship

Written by Eric Holden Friday, 18 March 2011 00:00

Senior guard Barbara Sullivan scored a game-high 15 points and junior forward Christina Mangels added 13 to lead the Garden City Lady Trojans to a 46-40 victory over the Division Lady Dragons on Saturday, March 5 at C.W. Post.

The Lady Trojans (18-3) were the No. 2 seed in the Class A playoff bracket, while the Lady Dragons (19-2) were ranked No. 1 in the conference and the defending Nassau County champions.

Winning the county title proved to hinge on the in-game battle between Mangels and Division’s 6’0” center Kristen Stuart. The sizable foes stood toe-to-toe and neutralized each other in the paint, which opened up the perimeter game for each team’s sharpshooters.
