Summer Music on the Green

The Garden City Recreation Dept. will again run its summer concert series at the Gazebo on the Village Green. All concerts will be held on Thursday in July and will begin at 7:15 pm. Bring your own chairs or blankets and enjoy this free series.

 

First Annual Nassau County Executive Cup Held July 23

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced that on July 23 Nassau will be hosting the County’s top high school and adult soccer players to participate in the First Annual Nassau County Executive Cup, which will be held at Mitchel Athletic Complex.

The finest high school boys’ soccer players from around Nassau County will showcase their talents in front of college coaches from the tri-state area. This event will provide high school athletes the opportunity to compete with the best in the county.

 

GCHS Coach Celebrates 600th Win!

Richie Smith just achieved a baseball coach’s distinction shared by few – his 600th team win! A stratospheric achievement for a man who has dedicated his life to physical education and America’s pastime in Garden City, Richie humbly reflected on the honor, stating, “I’m surrounded by good people. Eight hundred varsity baseball players had a hand in this – it’s a tribute to our baseball program and to the quality of the players.”

24-1 Shot Claims Third Leg of Triple Crown

Over 55,779 fans watched and waited with great anticipation at last Saturday’s 143rd Belmont Stakes. They waited for the sun to shine; it didn’t. They waited for the mud to turn back to Belmont’s trademark dirt; it wouldn’t. But on a day where the impossible seemed implausible, it happened.

Last year, 13-1 underdog Drosselmeyer took the third leg of the Triple Crown and this year saw much of the same with 24-1 shot Ruler on Ice.

In the event of a less than beautiful day, all shows will be held indoors in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall, 295 Stewart Ave.

Parents Teaching Water Safety Can Save the Lives of Children

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Acting Police Commissioner Thomas C. Krumpter would like to remind county residents that water safety is something all parents should be aware of. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury related death among children ages 1 - 14. It can happen very quickly and in less than 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) of water, so filled bathtubs, swimming pools, wading pools, hot tubs, and even buckets of water and sinks can be dangerous.

 

Mangano Shows Adelphi Team Spirit

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano visited Adelphi University and wished the No. 5 ranked Men’s lacrosse team good luck before they head to M&T Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland for their Division II Championship game against Mercyhurst College on May 29. The Adelphi University Panthers are back in the National Championship game for the first time in 10 years after their 14-11 victory at Limestone College. “I want to wish the Panthers the best of luck in this big game,” said County Executive Mangano. “I hope they keep with them these words from the great Tommy Lasorda ‘The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man’s determination.’ I have no doubt that they will bring that determination with them to Baltimore.”
