Local Golf Pros Share Their Love Of The Sport

Friday, 19 October 2012 00:00

Charlie Grego, PGA, the assistant professional at the Garden City Golf Club (GCGC), spent his evening off instructing Bigs and Littles from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) on August 27 at Eisenhower Park Driving Range.

In fact, he planned and hosted the evening of golf instruction with the generous assistance of members of GCGC. Charlie secured a donation from Greg Burke of Lane Office Dirtt Knoll to purchase collared shirts for all participants, worked with Al Vanasco to obtain a permit to reserve stalls at the driving range and borrowed six sets of junior golf clubs with the assistance of Ron Furman. Additionally, Charlie enlisted the help of fellow golf professionals Matt Lavolsi, assistant professional/PGA apprentice of Cherry Valley Club and J.R Repetti, outside operations of GCGC to provide instruction for the 12 Bigs and Littles from BBBSLI.

Garden City Girls Swim Team Sets Nassau County Record

Written by Ed Rotondo Friday, 12 October 2012 00:00
The Garden City girls swim team has been a model of consistency over the past 13 years for coach Anne Sullivan. And the term consistent may be selling them short. They have been consistently awesome, having won the Nassau County title each of the last 13 years, while going undefeated for the past 10 seasons.

With the season under way the Lady Trojan swimmers are keeping the streak alive with a perfect 4-0 record. Their latest victory was on Thursday at Jericho by a score of 104 to 74. The significance of this particular victory was that Coach Sullivan and the girls swim team has now won an incredible 100 consecutive victories, a Garden City record for any sport and a Nassau County swim record. The streak started in 2001 after GC lost a meet to Sewanhaka. The team went on to win their last meet of 2001 and haven’t looked back since.  When asked about the accomplishment Coach Sullivan remarked “I’m not really into the numbers, it’s always been about the girls doing their best – and that has always been good enough for us to win.”

Garden City Defeats Roslyn 2-0

Written by Ed Rotondo Friday, 05 October 2012 00:00

Trojans beat a scrappy Bulldogs squad on a pair of second half goals

The Garden City boys came out recently on their home turf fired up and looking to get on the winning side of the ledger against Roslyn. From the opening touch, the GC boys played with intensity; they were seemingly first to every loose ball, challenged all 50-50 chances or jumped higher for any headers in the air. With the game being played with a somewhat “ugly” style of soccer in the first half, the Trojans intensity carried the game. Once the GC boys settled down in the second half and began controlling the ball, the offense took over and produced two goals for the win.

Early in the first half, Garden City put the pressure on the Roslyn defense and finally broke through with a goal by Patrick Keogh off a deflected cross by Jack Gillan. The goal was a good example that hard work pays dividends, as Gillan fought through the Bulldogs defense to get the ball into the box. The second goal came with about 15 minutes left in the game and was scored by Gillan. This time it was about being in the right place and having a quicker step to the ball as he jumped between two defenders and placed his shot inside the left post for the 2-0 lead.

HOTA Lightning Girls SC Marches In German-American Stueben Parade

Friday, 28 September 2012 00:00

“HOTA… HOTA… HOTA…” chanted the Franklin Square, Floral Park, and Garden City girls from the HOTA soccer club as they marched in the spirited German-American Stueben Parade on Saturday, Sept. 15 in New York City.

Staged as the 7th division in the parade line, a little waiting on 58th Street didn’t put a damper on the girls’ spirits.  They used up the time to build camaraderie by sharing city pretzels, buying German flags, and stocking up on other fun trinkets from street vendors.  HOTA Lightning Coach Greg Shevlin said, “There’s a feeling of community among the girls – it’s a great way to honor HOTA’s heritage and build solidarity.”
