The Belmont Festival Committee has advised my office that plans have been finalized for the 12th annual Belmont Festival at Garden City - A Salute to America. This year’s event, which will have a red, white and blue theme, will be held on Friday evening June 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. on Seventh Street. The United States Air Force Band, the Afterburners, will be featured along with several other bands. There will be some new special events along with activities for the children including face painters and clowns.
Last week a resident, in an attempt to mask the odor coming from their sewer clean-out pit, poured some household bleach into the pit. The smell from the bleach did not have the result that the resident had in mind, so they in turn poured a pine scented cleaning solution into the pit too! Both the Garden City Fire and Police Departments responded to a report of an unknown odor and medical emergency.
Unfortunately, the combination of the two cleaning solutions created a toxic mixture, which resulted in the resident experiencing shortness of breath from the exposure. Medical assistance was needed and the resident was transported to a local hospital for testing and observation. Fortunately the resident was treated and released.
Please keep in mind that household chemicals are meant for specific uses and should not be mixed due to the unknown. These chemicals may react and cause a deadly mixture. Residents are reminded to read instructions and heed all warnings on the label.
Working under a special permit from the village, food establishments on Seventh Street, New Hyde Park Road and Franklin Avenue have placed tables and chairs outside their shops and restaurants for your convenience and enjoyment. Please stop by to let the merchants know that you appreciate their efforts and enjoy the many fine tastes of Garden City.
The next board of trustees meetings will be held on Thursday, June 4, and Thursday, June 21. The meetings will be held in the Board Room at Village Hall and will begin at 8 p.m.
I encourage residents to periodically utilize the village’s website for information regarding the village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. One item that is listed on the village’s website are the agendas for the various village boards and commissions. This is contained under the heading of Administration under the sub-heading of Meeting Agendas.
