Regrettably, all too often our young people are criticized for the negative behavior of a relative few. I am pleased to let you know that this Halloween was virtually free of vandalism demonstrating that our young people do care about their Village. On behalf of the parents, I thank residents for providing delicious but safe “treats” for the children. A good day was had by all!
Daylight Savings Time ended on Sunday, Nov. 6. Residents are reminded that clocks should have been set back one hour.
This is also a good time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide batteries. In fact, it is recommended that you install new batteries twice a year to be sure they are always working properly. If you do replace your batteries, please be aware that there is a box for recycling batteries in the Business Office at Village Hall.
Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, is the one day each year in which America remembers her sons and daughters who served in the Armed Forces of the United States. It is right that a gratified nation set aside one day a year to recognize and remember these men and women.
On Friday, Nov.11, the William Bradford Turner Post of the American Legion of Garden City will hold a short memorial salute to these Veterans at 11 a.m. at the memorial situated at the Gazebo - War Memorial opposite the Garden City Hotel at Seventh Street. All residents are invited and encouraged to attend these brief ceremonies.
Village offices will be closed on Friday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. For your convenience, correspondence for the village may be placed in the “Letter” drop slot at the front door.
There will be no regular garbage or recycling pickup on Veterans Day. The holiday week collection will be as follows:
Western Half of the Village (West of Rockaway Avenue) Monday and Wednesday
Eastern Half of the Village (East of Rockaway Avenue) Tuesday and Thursday
Western Half of the Village (West of Rockaway Avenue) Wednesday, Nov. 16
Eastern Half of the Village (East of Rockaway Avenue) Wednesday, Nov.16
Residents scheduled for recycling on Election Day are asked to put their recyclables out on Friday, Nov. 18. All other recycling days remain the same. Rubbish collection has been rescheduled to Wednesday, November 16.
The next regularly scheduled board of trustees’ meeting for the month of November is on Nov.17. I encourage all residents to attend Board of Trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a firsthand perspective.
