There was normal garbage and recycling pickup on Monday, Oct.10. Residences west of Rockaway Avenue will have their garbage collected on Monday and Thursday and those east of Rockaway Avenue will be collected on Tuesday and Friday. Rubbish will be collected on Wednesday.
Next Saturday, Oct.15, 2011 will be a very festive day in our village marked by the Chamber of Commerce’s 32nd annual Fall Festival Street Fair, combined with the annual High School Homecoming Day Parade and the annual Street Fair. There will be lots of activities for the children as well as two bands: “Fivestone,” a contemporary rock band and “Crash & Burn,” a classic rock band. Bring your family and enjoy the community spirit and fun.
The Chamber’s Street Fair on Seventh Street and Franklin Avenue is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will run through mid-afternoon. Seventh Street, between Franklin and Hilton Avenues, will be closed to all traffic from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. For your convenience, please use the Hilton and Franklin Avenue entrances to Parking Field 7S and the Stewart Avenue entrances to Parking Field 7N. The High School’s Homecoming Parade will step off promptly at noon from the most easterly end of Seventh Street and proceed west along Seventh Street to Cathedral Avenue, north onto Stewart Avenue, west to Oxford Boulevard and north to the High School parking field. The Homecoming festivities and football game will follow the Parade at the Warren King Field.
The Long Island Blood Services in conjunction with the employees at Village Hall will be holding a Blood Drive on Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 1 to 7 p.m. in the second floor meeting room of the Fire Department Headquarters Building on Stewart Avenue. The need for blood has again reached a critical level so please consider donating.
For more information, or to schedule an appointment to donate blood, please contact the Human Resources Department at Village Hall (465-4170 or 465-4171).
Your donation will help to save over three lives.
All residents and friends are invited to attend the Annual Inspection and Open House on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 12:30 p.m. The program will be conducted at fire headquarters and in the employee parking field, located on the west side of Village Hall on Stewart Avenue. There will be fire safety demonstrations, an appearance by Sparky the Fire Dog, a poster contest, refreshments, giveaways and more. The annual observance of Fire Prevention Week in Garden City will be Oct. 9 through Oct. 15. The National Fire Prevention Week theme for this year is “It’s Fire Prevention Week - Protect Your Family From Fire.”
Your Fire Department does an outstanding job to protect our lives and homes. Please stop by to show your support for them. I’m sure that your entire family will enjoy the program.
The next regularly scheduled board of trustees’ meeting for the month of October is on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. I encourage all residents to attend Board of Trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective.
