On Wednesday, April 27, 2011, there will be a Village-wide referendum on a bond issue in the sum of $3.75 million for funding to demolish St. Paul’s. Voting will take place at the Fieldhouse at St. Paul’s School, from noon until 9 p.m. Your vote, be it against funding for demolition, or for the funding, is very important.
Please make your voices heard.
I have personally noticed and I have received complaints from residents about speeding within village boundaries. I have asked the police department to enhance their vigilance and issuance of tickets to those driving in the village at speeds in excess of the 30 mph village speed limit.
Residents who have in-ground sprinklers are advised that their sprinklers must have certification of their backflow prevention devices before activation for the season.
Please take a minute to schedule an appointment with your sprinkler servicer or a certified backflow prevention assembly tester who is certified by the Nassau County Department of Health. If the test discloses that the assembly is not operating satisfactorily, please have the necessary repairs made and the assembly retested by the certified tester. On completion of a test showing that the assembly is operating satisfactorily, the certified tester should complete a test and Maintenance Report Form and forward to Village Hall Department of Public Works. An untested backflow device is considered a potential hazard to the residents of the village.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to call Steven Bayard at 465-4024.
I would like to ask you to do your part to support all businesses within Garden City. I would also like to encourage all residents and professionals within Garden City to shop locally. Your patronage will be appreciated and is needed.
Many residents consider shopping and dining in our business districts as “experience shopping” because they meet friends and neighbors along the way and have an opportunity to interact with them. This is in stark contrast to frantically dashing through the crowds in the mall or the big box retailers.
I encourage residents to make a conscious effort to choose Garden City as the place to shop and dine. Customer service, selection and quality are outstanding. While shopping or dining, let the merchant know that you appreciate them and all that they offer.
Keep in mind, but for these merchants and businesses within our borders on Seventh Street, New Hyde Park Road and Franklin Avenue you would have to leave the comfort of your Village to dine, shop or even to buy a newspaper.
We all want to keep the environment clean and green. However, I would like to remind the village residents that although we want to have beautiful lawns and flowers, we must keep in mind the village’s law with regard to water conservation (Local Law 3-1987) is now in effect.
The restrictions are:
Lawn sprinkling and garden irrigation only from April 16 to Nov. 30 of each year and only during the hours of 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The days a person may water are:
Odd numbered properties on odd numbered days.
Even numbered properties on even numbered days.
Properties with no numbers on even numbered days.
Automatic sprinkler systems:
All newly installed systems must have moisture sensors approved by the Department of Public Works. For more information please call 465-4012 regarding sprinkler systems.
All home car washing must be done with hoses fitted with spray nozzles with automatic shut-off.
Use of water for washing down driveways or walkways is prohibited.
Please cooperate by observing these restrictions. The police department has been requested to issue appearance tickets to those persons found to be in violation of this law.
The Garden City Police Department in its continuing effort to provide service for the residents and in keeping with the Department’s less than two minute average response time to emergencies, wishes to remind the residents of the Police Department’s Well Check Program. This program is available to any senior citizen, a person with a disability, or to any person suffering a hardship. Police Commissioner Ernest J. Cipullo has advised me that residents can contact the Police Department and be placed on its Well Check Log. Each morning, a person who is placed on the Police Department’s Log can call in to check in and let us know if they are okay or in need of assistance. If a person who is on the list does not contact the Police Department, an attempt will be made to contact that person either by phone and/or in person. Any person who wishes to be placed on the Garden City Police Department’s Well Check Log may contact the Desk Officer at (516) 465-4101.
The next board of trustees meetings will be on Thursday, May 5, and Thursday, May 19, at 8 p.m. The meetings are held in the boardroom at Village Hall.
I encourage residents to periodically utilize the village’s website for information regarding the village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.garden cityny.net. For your convenience, listed on the village’s homepage under the heading of Police Department is a sub-heading “Traffic Safety,” which highlights the measures that the Garden City Police Department takes to ensure the safety of the village residents.
