Garden City Board Studies Effects of Lighthouse Project

Friday, 14 August 2009 00:00

(The following was submitted by the Garden City Board of Trustees Public Information Committee)

The Garden City Board of Trustees (BOT) has been studying the effects of this massive development for several years. The majority of the trustees believe that something will be developed there but feel this proposed project is far too large and could have significant adverse affects on the neighboring village business districts, as well as quality of life for all residents. Nothing of this magnitude has ever been attempted in Nassau County.

What Every Long Islander Needs to Know

Written by Nancy Rauch Douzinas Friday, 03 July 2009 00:00

Doing Pre-K Right

In the 2007-08 school year, Long Island schools took more than $11 million in state aid for pre-K and . . . sent it back unused. Over 4,000 allocated seats were left empty.

What a catastrophe!

Unemployment is still rising. Businesses continue to fail. Municipal governments require assistance to avoid further slashing of vital social programs. Nassau County needs help from Albany to avoid layoffs and the closing of many of our offices, parks and facilities.

Congratulations to the Class of 2009

Next Sunday, June 28, marks the graduation of the Garden City High School Class of 2009. On behalf of the village board of trustees and the residents we extend our very best wishes and congratulations to the Class of 2009. They are an outstanding group of young people who are a credit to our community and I know that they will be ambassadors of Garden City in their “homes away from home” during their college years. We urge them to keep listening, learning and to seek knowledge so that they can make a difference.

Johnson Announces Passage of Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit

The New York State Senate unanimously passed a vitally important economic stimulus and community revitalization program: the Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit, Senator Craig Johnson announced.

The bill, (S2960-B), strengthens the state program first launched in 2006 and will make New York State more competitive against the nearly 30 other states with similar programs. The changes will allow the state to target reinvestment to distressed communities, as determined by the U.S. Census, and incorporate cost savings to the administration of the program.

Letter: Mineola Condo Complex Discussion Strikes a Cord

Tuesday, 09 June 2009 15:49

I am writing in response to the June 4 article entitled, “Nine Story Condo Complex Proposed For 250 Old Country Rd.” This is the site of the former KeySpan building. This building has been off the tax rolls for seven years. Your article quotes several people from Garden City. I attended the hearing and spoke at the hearing. Your article refers to Deputy Mayor Donald Brudie’s statement: “We’re kind of persona non grata with the residents of Mineola.” Mr. Brudie went on to say, “They feel we should keep our noses in Garden City and they’ll keep their noses in Mineola.” This is not the thoughts of the residents of Mineola. He also said, “It’s the residents [of Mineola] who don’t understand the situation…”
