Running Against Cancer

Event raises $10,000 for cancer center

On April 26, the 5th Annual Garden City Teachers Association (GCTA) hosted the “GC For A Cure” Run/Walk, which wound up being a huge success. The run/walk event attracted close to 600 people and raised about $10,000 for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. A corresponding event, Uniting Against Lung Cancer “Kites for a Cure,” raised about $1,000 to support their lung cancer research grant program.

Thankfully the weather did not impact the fun-filled morning. People came out to walk/run in honor and in memory of loved ones. This year’s race was dedicated to Michele White, former art teacher at Stewart School, who lost her battle to cancer in July.

The overall male winner Floral Park’s John Walsh, who crossed the finish line with a time of 17:51 while Garden City’s Caroline Ferri was the overall female winner with a time of 19:47.

The Garden City Teachers’ Association would like to thank all the runners, walkers, community members, volunteers, parents, and students who came out to support this great event. They would also like to thank their sponsors: The Founders Group at Morgan Stanley, La Bottega, GCI-Environmental and Engineering Consultants, Patriot Supply, Daniel Gale- Sotheby’s International Realty, The Donnelly Group, The UPS Store of Garden City, Avellino’s Pizzeria and Catering, Bellissima Photography, Crossfit Garden City, Constant Entertainment, Hint Water, New York Running Company, The McKay Family, and Walter Levchuck.

The GCTA would like to thank all the local merchants who so graciously donated a raffle basket item/gift card. In addition, they would like to thank Garden City Public Schools, the Village of Garden City, the Garden City Police Department, Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corporation, the Garden City PTA, the GCREA, and all those who live on the race course for their support.

The Garden City Community came together to support a great cause and to help make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Kerry Calvert is the race director of GC For a Cure.
