Garden City police are beefing up patrols on and around Meadow Street to help ease the concerns of residents there who have been on edge ever since a dead body was found on the front lawn of 65 Meadow Street.
As if things aren’t bad enough, local businesses, municipalities and school districts on Nov. 2 had to fork over 34 cents for every $100 of their payrolls to help dig the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) out of a $1 billion deficit.
By a vote of 1,140 to 829, voters approved the Garden City School District’s $36.5 million bond referendum Oct. 27. Work will now go forward on improvements at all nine of the district’s buildings.
The Homicide Squad is investigating an incident that occurred on Oct. 22 in Garden City.
Republican incumbent Kate Murray is seeking re-election to her fourth term as Hempstead Town supervisor. Challenging her this year is Garden City resident and Democratic candidate Kristen McElroy. They are seeking a two-year term as town leader.
Republican incumbent Mark Bonilla is seeking re-election as Hempstead town clerk, which holds a two-year term. Challenging him this year is Garden City resident and Democratic candidate Anthony Rattoballi.
Business is difficult. Not just in Garden City but everywhere. Some experts predict an economic turn around is on the horizon. But right now, what are local merchants doing to keep their heads above water?
They are leaning on each other to survive.
Several employers and many of their employees who work at the Garden City Medical Center located at 520 Franklin Avenue are angered over a newly instituted $150 parking permit fee.
Many of these employees shop and grab lunch along 7th Street. But because they now have to pay the village $150 for parking, some say they will no longer dine or shop in the village.
On Nov. 3, residents of the Nassau County’s 8th Legislative District will choose their representative in the Nassau County Legislature for the next two years. Incumbent Vincent Muscarella is being challenged by Gaspare Tumminello.
The district encompasses Franklin Square, Stewart Manor, West Hempstead, Garden City and Garden City South as well as parts of Elmont and Floral Park.
