Last month, three Garden City High School students won top prizes at the 11th Annual Business Leadership Competition sponsored by the Young Professionals Chamber of Commerce, a division of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. This was the first time Garden City participated in the event.
Congratulations goes to senior Kristina Ricigliano, student of Mary Ferrara, who won the first place prize for the Life Skills Job Interview division of the competition. Nearly 400 students from 14 different Long Island schools competed in various categories. “Kristina completed a resume and job application for a fictional position at Best Buy,” explained Dr. Erin McKinstry, business teacher at the high school. “Kristina needed to demonstrate an exceptional sense of integrity, attention to detail, and a commitment to customer satisfaction during her interview. She then responded to judges questions regarding her interest in the position.”
As a result of her first place finish, Ricigliano and her family were invited to attend a special winter reception at the John W. Engeman Theatre in Northport, where she was honored.
Freshmen Joseph Doud and Robert Morizio, who partnered to participate in the Graphic Design division, took home a third place win. Joseph and Robert are students of Dr. McKinstry’s and members of the Future Business Leaders of America. “Their task was to create a logo design for a new burger restaurant in a busy town on Main Street, Long Island,” said Dr. McKinstry. “The entrants needed to create a three-color logo the new restaurant. The logo was displayed on a presentation board and the students then had up to five minutes to present in front of two judges, including three minutes of questioning time.”
