Live Music

Gathering Time and Mara Levine will perform at Garden Stage at Garden City’s Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 8:30 p.m., preceded by an open mic at 7:30, Start with the social consciousness of Peter, Paul & Mary; add the vocal complexity of Crosby, Stills & Nash, throw in a bit of the Byrds and a jot of Joni Mitchell and you have Gathering Time, a harmony trio that WFUV’s John Platt calls “among the top performers in the New York metropolitan area.” Called “one of the best singers of her generation” by Christine Lavin, Mara Levine creates beautiful interpretations of folk songs. Currently on the road supporting her second album, Jewels and Harmony, Levine is receiving stellar reviews and had the #1 album on the Folk DJ chart for January 2013. Pictures Worth A Thousand Words

On Thursday, May 8, Dr. Phyllis Goodfriend, a docent for the Nassau County Museum of Art, will present a free visual lecture, “Genesis: To Save Our Planet,” at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library. Here you will be able to view the silent drama of extraordinary photography by Sebastião Salgado during this presentation. Photographer, environmentalist and humanitarian Salgado’s most recent work “would not be to photograph what is destroyed, but what is still pristine, to show what we must hold and protect.” He likes to quote a hopeful statistic: “Forty-five percent of our planet is still what it was at the beginning.” The result of 8 years of work, Genesis is now touring the world as a major exhibit. Salgado has spent many years documenting the horrors of war, famine, and the displacement of indigenous populations and worked with Doctors Without Borders and UNICEF. This public program is funded by Friends of the Garden City Public Library who have served more than 60 years of library support. Garden City residents will be given priority by presenting your Garden City Public Libary card at the program room door. Non-residents will be accommodated on a space available basis 10 minutes before showtime. No saved seats. Limited parking. No tickets are required. The Garden City Public Library is located at 60 7th St. For directions, please call 516-742-8405.
