Adult Yoga Fall Classes

Certified yoga instructor Connie McKnight has designed adult yoga classes with all ages in mind. Each class is one hour long. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes. The course schedule is as follows:

Mondays at 7:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 8 in St. Paul’s Senior Center

Wednesdays at 9 a.m., beginning Sept. 10 in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall.

All classes will be held for 13 weeks at a cost of $90. To register, you can download an application from www.gardencityrecreation.org or visit the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave.

Recreation and parks is happy to announce its Dance Conservatory schedule. Registration for classes will be announced at a later date. Classes are open to children ages 3 ½ years through high school aged who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The offerings are as follows:

Fall Roller Hockey

The Garden City Recreation & Parks Department is proud to announce the start of its Fall Roller Hockey Program at Community Park. This program will be open to residents of the Village of Garden City in grades K through 12 according to the following schedule:

Kindergarten Learn & Play Clinic—Sundays at 1:45 p.m. for one hour beginning Sept. 7

1st Grade Pee Wees—Sundays at 3 p.m. for one hour beginning Sept. 7

2nd & 3rd Grade Mites—Sundays at 4:30 & 5:45 p.m. game times beginning Sept. 7

4th & 5th Grade Juniors—Fridays at 4 & 5:30 p.m. game times beginning Sept. 5

Middle School 6th, 7th, 8th Grade—Fridays at 6:45 & 8 p.m, game times beginning Sept. 5

High School 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th Grade—Fridays at 9:15 p.m. beginning Sept. 5

K–8th grade divisions—$80 High School Division—$70

All participants are required to wear the following equipment at all times: Hockey helmet with cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, roller blades, protective cup, hockey stick and long pants (no shorts allowed). 30 And Over Roller Hockey

The Garden City Recreation & Parks Department is proud to announce the start of its Fall Roller Hockey Program for adults at Community Park. Games are strictly pick up and teams will be set each night according to the amount of participants there. This program will be open to residents of the Village of Garden City and will begin on Sunday Sept. 7 at 7 p,m.

The price for this program will be $70.

Fall Children’s Tennis Class Registration Announced

Registration for the start of the Fall 2014 Indoor Tennis Program for Children is beginning at the Community Park Tennis Center. Registration for Session one lessons begins immediately for residents of the village, by mail only until Sept. 11.

A schedule of classes and a registration form is on the reverse side of this information sheet. Walkins and Non resident children attending Garden City Public Schools* will be accepted beginning Sept. 11. Please make checks payable to the “Inc. Village of Garden City”. Mail the registration slip and registration fee to the Recreation Dept. at 108 Rockaway Ave. Please note—classes are not considered day care and can not be declared for tax exemption.

* Non resident children who would like to register for the tennis program must prove they attend one of the Garden City Public Schools. Proof must accompany registration and will be accepted beginning Sept. 11. An additional $50 fee will pertain to anyone in this category.

10 weeks of classes—Classes will begin Thursday, Sept, 18

Here is a description of the classes:

Tots Ages 4-5 And PeeWee - Ages 5 To 7

Introduction to tennis, emphasizing basic movement and striking skills in a fun game playing environment.

Novice—Ages 6 To 7

Continued development of basic movement and striking skills on a full-size court. Serving and scorekeeping will be introduced. Past tennis experience required.

Junior—Ages 8 To 11

Extension of Novice Level program. Continued emphasis on striking concepts, movement, and skills related to tennis play.

Junior Advanced—Ages 8 To 11

For the more serious, more advanced students. These lessons are offered in 1-1/2 hr time slots. Experience required.

Senior—Ages 12 And Older

Extension of Junior Program, continued emphasis on fundamentals and skills related to tennis play.

Senior Advanced—Ages 12 And Older

For the more serious, more advanced student. These lessons are offered in 1 1/2 hour time slots. Experience required.

Ultimate Workout

For experienced Junior and Senior Level tennis players who want to hone their skills through drills.

Donald Barrick, Life’s WORC Board Chairman announced that Janet Koch has been hired as the new Executive Director of Life’s WORC, a Garden City-based 501(c) (3) not-for-profit corporation. Koch assumes this leadership responsibility as Peter Smergut retires after 20 years in this position. After a thorough and extensive executive search process, the Life’s WORC Board is confident Koch has the vision and skills consistent with the needs of the organization. She will assume her position as executive director on Monday, Nov. 3.

Lots to buy at Resurrection’s Christmas Fair

Holiday shopping at Resurrection’s Christmas Fair combines fine quality, handmade gift items at reasonable prices. Members of Resurrection Lutheran Church have worked all year to create Christmas decorations, ornaments, and gift items. Beautiful table runners, scarves, hats, baby quilts, doll clothes for 18-inch dolls, and hand-painted wooden items are affordably priced to suit any budget. Find unique gifts for that special someone. Other displays feature jewelry, toys, books, games, baked goods, and treasures at the White Elephant Sale.

Net proceeds go to support mission work at Resurrection and The Life. Additional funding is awarded through Care Abounds in Communities, of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

High School Jazz Class Added To Dance Conservatory

Dance Conservatory Director Felicia Lovaglio has decided to add a jazz class for students in 9th through 12th grades who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City. This 55-minute class will be held on Saturdays at 4 p.m. beginning on Saturday, Nov. 8. The cost of this 20-week class will be $200. Preregistration is necessary by visiting the recreation and parks office at 108 Rockaway Ave.

Adult Dance Performance Group Now Registering

The recreation and parks department offers an adult dance group that works on jazz and contemporary moves and leads up to a performance in a Dance Company Showcase. Whether you are a beginner dance student or someone who danced as a child and would like to try again, this program will help you achieve your goals. Classes will be held on Saturday mornings beginning Saturday, Nov. 8. Each class is 55 minutes long and the session will run through May. The cost of this program will be $220.  

Reminder

With the fall sports season upon us, the department of recreation and parks would like to remind all residents that pets are not allowed in any neighborhood parks, Community Park, or St. Paul’s fields. Non compliance with this rule will result in the issuance of appearance tickets.

Register For The Online Registration Option

Garden City’s Department of Recreation and Parks will offer the option of online registration with credit card payment beginning with its winter programs in early December.

In order for a family to use the online registration option, the family will first need to visit the recreation and parks office at 108 Rockaway Ave. to verify residency and their family information and receive their password.  A list of instructions as to how to use the website will be included.
