Registration for the winter session of adult tennis lessons has now started. Classes will begin in January and are played at the Community Park Tennis Center. The 10-week, one-hour class will cost $249.
The recreation department offers lessons for adults in all ability levels. Kids around the world have been successfully playing tennis using the 10 and under format for years. The Village of Garden City Recreation Department is proud to announce that it will be adopting this USTA (United States Tennis Association) approved methodology for teaching children age 10 and under the game of tennis. By using slower-moving and lower-bouncing balls, shorter and lighter rackets on smaller courts kids can get into the game easier by making tennis more fun from the start by boosting their confidence and building skill development. Each practice will be designed appropriately for the physical, mental and social skills of that age group. Emphasis will be placed on rallying and playing so that children want to learn the skills necessary to play with their friends on a team. The rules for youth tennis have changed and the USTA requires all sanctioned 10 and under tournaments to be played using slower-moving and lower-bouncing balls on smaller courts. (Ages 4-8 will be taught on 36-foot by 18-foot court. Children 9 and 10 will be taught on 60-foot by 21-foot courts.) Therefore, the recreation department will be modifying the program to adapt to these new rules for its 10 and under tennis program.

When gardeners begin shopping for spring flowers, they may notice a familiar staple missing: the impatiens.
Impatiens walleriana, which are beloved globally for their wide selection of color and low maintenance, have been affected by a fungus called downy mildew. The fungus first causes tiny spots, then yellowness on the leaves. A few weeks later, all that’s left is the flower’s stem and a frustrated gardener.

The boys and girls high school teams are both rolling and have their sights set on a long run in the playoffs. Both team have faced a number of formidable opponents throughout the season and have successfully navigated their schedules. One thing that has been consistent for both teams has been that their defenses have had to stand tall at key times and shut down very active offenses. Both Coach Finnell and Coach Chapman have made sure that the non-league schedules of their teams will ensure that their teams are prepared for whatever the playoffs can throw at them.
After going the full season last year undefeated, the boys team has three blemishes on their record with losses to powerhouses Ward Melville, Manhasset and LaSalle of PA. With a 9-3 record the Trojans are looking to wrap up the number two seed in the playoffs to force a rematch of the Manhasset game in the County finals. The boys have excelled defensively only allowing 4.25 goals against per game. And if you remove those three tough losses the goals against average drops to 3.1.
